TILE WOLF STOR
STERRETT'S GAT, JULY 24; 1871•
The neighborhood lying east of Ster
rett's Gap,. along the State road, was
thrown into. a state of'consiffeyable ex
citement about two Weeks ego, by the
appearance of a pack of wolves, which
was first seen by a boy of Mr.• George
&Nay's, who was, at the dine, hunting
cattle in the mountain. The pack con
sisted of six in number; they followed a
dog that accompanied the boy for a good
distance. " The boy ran to the nearest
house and gave the alarm, when soon
there were_ men enough under arms to
fight - a
hundred wolves. Since that
time they have been seen several times,
by different people, in the same neigh
borhood. There, is, however, not only
one
~ pack of those animals about, but
there'are several, and - quite a nattiabor of
young. ones-with, some_of,them —RA&
not likely that we will get rid of these
animals soon, unless there are some large
hunting parties raised to kill and scare
them away: The best time to hunt them
then, will be when the snow comes,. as
they can then be killed and driven. off,
otherwise, in the course of., a year or
two, we will be annoyed by hundreds of
wolves, which will "endanger sheep,
calves, and even children.
DEPARTURE OF THE CAVALMY.—Ac
c9rding to an official order promulgated, ,
at the Barrack , on the eighteenth
ant,Ake entire command &malted on
the morning of the twentieth. Thus, in
compliance with General Orders No. 12,
dated St. Louis Arsenal, Mo., April 26,
1871, this post is herebk discontinued as
Cavalry Sub Depot.
There wore about 70 men in the com
mand, accompanied by a half a dozen of
families. A large number of citizens as
sembled in the vicinity of the gas house,
to Witness the departure of the cavalry
troops from the garrison. But all things
must have an end, and soon the Mail
Train made its appearance, the last fare
well was quickly given, and the train
started off, amid the cheers of the by
standers, and the sweet strains of that
well-known tune, entitled " the girl I
left behind me," skillfully executed by
Buglers King, Fletcher and Billow.
Brigadier General E.• P. 'Wright, M.
8., retains command of the Post, with
Ordinance Sergeant Edward Fury, and
14 or 15 men under him.
Post Adjutant Mahnken and some of
these men will take their departure in a
few days. Thus Carlisle Barracks is
finally ababdoned as a Cavalry Sub Db
pot, after havitig been Used for that pur
pose for it number of years.
ASHLAND CEMETERY.—Taking a stroll
to this quiet, though beautiful city of
the dead, a few days since, we were
forcibly struck with the marked im ,
provements that have been made in these
grounds during the past year. A large
number of additional shade trees have
boon planted, new walks nrade„ while
everything• connected with the grounds
is in perfect keeping with its surround
ings. Several beautiful monuments have
also been erected during the past year.
Among additional improvements lately
completed, we noticed a hagdsome foun
tain erected on Mr. .Tanies nosier's
plot ofground, by Messrs. Campbell &
nenwood, of this place. The base of
the fountain is niee feet ; it is sur
mounted by a figure of a child ; it bas
four side jets in' addition to the ono
on the top.. A well 20 feet deep, through
solid rock, was excavated, in order
carry off the waste water from the, foun
tain. A hydrant, to furnish water to
the numerous visitors that throneihe
cemetery on Sabbath, has been erected
outside of this enclosure. . - •
As the majority of the lots in. Ashland
Cemetesy are already dtsposed of, and
as the price of -them wiO`no doubt, be
greatly enhanced in value in the course
of a few years, those of our citizens de
sirous of securing a place for h burial
ground, should take advantage of the
present prices.
T7IIC SOLDIERS' MONUMENT.
A meeting of the members of the
Council of the Soldiers' Monument Asso
ciation of Cumberland County, was held
on the twentieth of .Tuly instant.
The contractor, Mr. Richard Owen,
reported that the Monument was now so
near completion, that a day might be
fixed for publicly celebratpg the event.
Tho Council therefore resolved, that
in commemoration of the patriotism and
heroism of the soldiers of Cumberland
county, in whose 1161.10 r this Monument
has been erected, the occasion should be
marked by a military and civic parade,
to be followed by the formal unveiling
of the Monument, the delivery of
Oration and other appropriate exercises.
Oil motion, Saturday, the nineteenth of
August, was fixed as the day. On
motion, Gen. LEMUEL TODD was elected
Chief Marshal, with power to appoint
Aids and Assistant Marshals, and to
arrange 'all the details of the parade.
The oration, it is confidently expected,
will be pronounced by Ms Excellency,
Gen. forma W. GEARY, Governor of
Pennsylvania. ,
On motion, Messrs A. L. Sponslor, Dr.
W. W. Dale and John Campbell, were
appointed a CMninitteo ,on Invitations.

memory of their Tallen comrades. It is
suggested that the Returned Soldiers of
