DinuaNo. 7 -One of •the most unpleas
alit things to do, is to be continually
dunning subscribers. Too'ninny persons
do not realize the importance to editors
of the two or 'four dollars that are duo
them. To them it is a trivial amount,
but When multiplied by hundreds it runs
into thousands °Meiners. "We have this
week sent out, ;['largo number of bills,
which we hope the subscribers for whom
they are intended will promptly respond
to. Our terms are' - Two Dollars, in ad
vance ; and we hope all, subscribers,
know that their subscription is past duJ
will be kind enough to remit at once.
YOUNG.'IIIEI , i'S CHRISTIAN AsecclA-
TioN.—We understand that application
_has been made to the Commissioners of
the county, for the use of the Council
Chamber in the Court House, to move
their library there, and have a public
reading room. Wo have no doubt
that the room will he granted for this
Purpose, and it will, undoubtedly, be of
great benefit to our young men, who
would then have-a place to go in the
evening, away from all temptation, and
at the same time gain much useful infor
mation by the reading of instructive
books. By all means let us have the
reading room.

TuE committee who have in ,charge
the raising of funds for the completion of
_the Soldiers' Monument, for this place,
have been working assiduously for the
last two or three years .for the piMpose
of raising money sufficient to complete
it. They have very nearly succeeded,
but a small amount remains yet to be
raised. We have as a suggestion which
we will give . for what it is worth. This
monument is erected in memory of all
the soldiers front this county,,,,who fell
during the war. It is at the county seat,
and occupies that portion of the public
square which is the property of the
county. Would it not be just the right
thing for our county commissioners to
donate the small sum which yet remains
to complete this work, out of the funds
of the county? It is a disgrace that this
matter should be so long on band, and
We know no easier or better way of clos
ing it out than the one we here suggest.
Trutr:E PEnsoNs BITTEN EN' SA CAGE
Dous.—During the progress of the fire
on Tuesday night, Harry Brown, a little
hay of about eight years. of age, son of
Policeman Brown, undertook to rescue
iTie turkeys- and chickens, in the yard
adjoining the, burning stable, and be
longing to Squire Keepers.. On entering
the chicken yard, two ferocious bull
'dogs, belonging to the Squire, attacked
tearing him terribly in the left-leg
and arm: It is a miracle that the child
escaped with his life. Miss Lizzie Keep
ers, who accompanied the little fellow,
was also bitten and bruised. The Squire,
rushinil to their rescue, and no doubt
thinking to quiet the dogs also received,
some scratches on his hands.
In the case ofdittle 'Rarity 'Dr. Kieffer
was immediately sent for, and every
thing was clone that would in any man
ner alleviate his terrible sufferings.
A FAMILY BURNED TO DEATII.—We
Lave received intelligence of the fol

cureil near Markleville, Perry county :
It appears that Mr. Thomas J. Boyer, a
citizen of New Bloomfield paid a visit to
his fathers on Friday last, residing at the
former place, remaining there over night,
and occupying a room on the second
doer.
About 3 o'clock on Saturday morning
he was aroused in some manner,' when
he discovered that the house was in
flames, and attempted to pass doWn the
stairway . , but the smoke and flames pre
vented him from doing go. Ile finally
escaped by jumping from a window, but
was considerably stunned, and rendered
insensible fora considerable length of
time. Upen recovering his senses he
!woke in the . window or the apartment in
hitch his' parents slept, front which a
dense volume of smoke issued.
Several hu4eettial attempts were made
to recover the bodies, allhough they
could he plainly seen.
The persims constuiipd were John P.
Royer, and Mary Ann, 'his wile, aged
about 50, with a son a n d daughter, aged
respectiVely H kna , y) years.

SOUTII AFRICAN DIAMOND FIELDS.—
Sir John Swinburne, Bart., has (Novcm,
Ler 0) delivered an interesting address on
the :South African gold and _ diamond
fields, at Newcastle, England, from which
we make the following- extracts :
It lies already been stated that the road
from Durban to these fields lies across the
- Drakensbury - moutrtehiti, hi - ch - wee - de=
scribed by Sir John as being very beauti
ful, vast masses of basalt having been
forced up by some former volcanic action,
forming great natural fortresses, with
perpendicular sides, as the road rises in
about 40 miles no lesS than 2,400 feet, the
highest part of the road at the watershed
being 5,400 feet. From Harrismith to
Potchefstroom, a distance of about 100
miles, is a rolling country, the whole
forming a great plateau. Tho Vaal river
forms the boundary between the Free
State and Transvaal, as the South Afri
can republic was generally called. It is
in the rifler that the diamonds aro princi
pally found. The process is exactly like
alluvial gold digging, the gravel-in the
river being washed in the usual cradle
and the diamonds sought out: While ho
was in the country the largest diamond,
called. " the Star of South Africa," had
been found, and it was sold to some Ger
man dealers in the cape for LCII,OOO or
£12,000, but when it came home to Eng
land, and had been cut at Amsterdam,
it was said to be the finest diamond that
had ever passed through the hands of the
renowned people who operated upon it.
He had seen the diamond since his.return
to England ; it was, what might be termed,
pear shaped, had a ,length of one inch
and a quarter by a breadth of one inch,
and the price asked for it was £25,000,
As regarded any one going out to look
for diamonds, lie could tell them that
they must be prepared to work like a
navvy.in a burning sun, and that the
average earnings were only sothething
like £2OO a year. They all heard of the
lucky finds, but it, Must be remembered
That - they were S - didom or never made
aware-of the thousand and'one instances
where men - Were lidf ly beaten and broken
down, and hail to leave the place in search
of quieter work elsewhere.
GOVERNOR CURTIN ON` • CONSTITU
TIONAL RP:POI:M.-A private letter from
Governor Curtin has just iken received
containing the following relative to the
proposed revision of our State Constitu
tion. After stating that he has not par
ticipated in political discussions since
he has been in Russia, the Governor
says :
" But I cannot refrain from encouraging
you in the important reform you treat so
fully and forcibly in your last letter. I
am rejoiced to learn that an earnest ef
fort is about to be made to secure a gerj
oral revision of the Constitution of
Pennsylvania, by calling upon the peo
ple of the State to exercis,e their sover
eign power through the channel of a
reform convention. Surely, such a
movement must meet, with the cordial
approval, and enlist the positive efforts
of the best men of both parties, for the
necessity of thorough reform is painfully
apparent to all. It is not in any sense a
question of party politics, and it should
be preserved from the dangers of mere
partisan direction. The revision of the
fundamental- law of a, great Common
wealth like Pennsylvania, after the
lapse of a third of a century, embracing
a decade of matchless progress, is a work
of no ,com mommagn tude.
" It is most vital to our vast and va
ried not erial interests, and equally so to
our future honor - and advancement,' that
the people should be enabled to perfect
their sadly needed reforms in the Most
. .
unbiased and dispassionate manner, and
therefore special elections, as far re
moved as possible front the annual po
litical struggles, should be held, not
only for the election of delegates to the
convention, but also for the raffle:then
or rejection of the amendments which
may be matured and proposed. ,
"Such a convention at this time could
. .
not fail to elevate 'the character of our
legislation, and to redeem our political
system. from many of the debauching
influences which have become so closely
interwoven with it. It would enforce a
just deference to the popular will in the
enactment of laws and in the exercise of
all delegated powers, and when the will
of the people is respected, the good
name and prosperity of the Coinmon
wealth a•e nevi.
