day evening, who were engaged in
stoning houses on Liberty alley. • They
were set free on a promise of returning
to the barracks immediately.
A 'GERMAN •IN T.B.OI3IILE.—A man,
named Schimmel, was arrested the other
morning by Offieer Sanno, on Louther
street, on the charge of attempting to
take the life of a countryman with a
butcher knife. He was taken before
Squire Holcomb, when he was commit
ted for trial.'

basement of Rheum's Hall, where the

RECOVERY OF STOLEN PROPERTYA
few days since, Officer Sanno succeeded
in arresting a thief that had robbed Mr.
'Philip Carper, drover, while riding in
a car on the Cumberland Valley road,
of a considerable sum of- money, checks,
valise, &c. The arrest was effected the
same day of the theft, and Abe, stolen

propel , recovered. The thief was
allowed to go free, under prothise of
leaving the country.
ThE pupils of the Mary Institute will
resume their school duties on next
Wednesday ; tlur seventh of September.
This school is too well knOwn among us
to need any word of commendation, but
