    RAISE PLENTY Oh' TOMATOES
Nothing else, except potatoes, supplies
a better standard article of food through ,
the whole. year. Cooked with plenty of
bread cramps they furnish a very pain
table and nourishing table dish, especially
from December to Suite, when fresh gar
den vegetables are not abundant. Hay
' ing sometimes failed with glass jai's, we'
now use tin cans ten inches long and
four and it:halt inches in diameter (cut
from a sheet of tin ton by foateen incites
and cheaply made). A hole, say one and,.
a-half inch in diameter, is loft in 'ono
end. The tonudOes, in large quantities
at a time, are cooked well, .as for the ta
ble, but without salt. They aro poured
into the cans hot, and a hit of tin well
soldered on. We put up fifteen to forty
cans at a time, and call in a Unman to
do the soldering, as we have a large
number of cans ready at a time. Thus
closely sealed they will keep perfect; i 4
month, a year, or five years. To proviild.
against a poor year and insurea?full sup
ply always, we put them alp for ono or
two years, in . advance. Scald the emptied
calls and set them away dry, and they
can be used several times with a little
help front the Unman -to smooth the
heads.
GRAPE WIN E. —A correspondent .of
'The, Germantown Telegraph gives • the
following reeipe for making five gallons
of wine : Press tho juice 'from twenty
pounds of grapes and rinse the puly an . d
skins in as much water as will over
them, mash theM and strain through a
coarse cloth, add this to juice and put it
in two pounds of brOwn sugar to each
gallon ; when the sugar is 'dissolved,
pour the whole into a 'keg having the
bong open, and let it stand where the
temperature will be about 70 degrees
until fermentation ceases ; then bung
tight, and let it rest a month to settle,-
when it should be drawn off quietly i - the
keg well washed, and the wino-returned
to it, adding one pound gond 'raisins
- and if the wine does- not seem 'sweet
enough, add two - pounds -sugar to the
whole. The necessity of doing this de
yends upon the kind and quality of the
ENE
The wine should remain until the km
is wanted the next so , when it ma
he bottled for u4b.
TURNIPS AMONG CORN.A. corres
pondent says : " It is frequently the case
that in passing through cornfields in am.
tumn, we find the space between the
rows occupied with sturdy weeds sone
times the spurious vegetation completely
oVertops the maize, , and "casts it into
the shade." Now, I would inquire, is it
not much better and more prudent,. in
every sense of the word, for the farmer
to occupy the soirimonopolized by the
exhausting weeds with some crop that
will contribute to his resources, than to
have it filled with such productionit, find
which will not only. "sap the land" most
wretchedly, but foul it by the dissemina
tion of their minute and multitudinous
seeds? Certainly no. farmer can doubt
the affirmative. By sowing the purple
top turnip seed at-the last dressing of the
corn crop, and scuffing" it in or sow
ing-just before it rain, and allowing that
to cover it, he can have aliundred bush- ,
els of good turnips .per'acre, if the soil
be rich and .well cultivated, instead -of :a
host of worthless and pestilent weeds.
To . PREVENT HOGS FROM Bit ti c EACII
UTRER.—A correspondentof The Prairie
Farmer says : Fifteen ycat•s ago I began
feeding a largo number of hogs On floore
pens around a flouring, mill, and they
commenced biting each other. One hog
wonid give another a bite, when he
would run and squeal, and each hog he
passed near, would give him a bite, al
thus they kept the poor animal going
until ho died. I woidd go to the pen and
stop them, hit . they would soon com
mence again. I concluded they were
feverish, which made them restless, and
they just hit each other for want of
something to cool their fever. I tried
a variety of remedies, amid at hingth tried
feeding stove coal, which I found a com
plete remedy. 7 have continued ever
since to feed my hogs'all the coal they
would eat, and have never had any more
trouble with their biting each other.
