Mark :twain lo the July 9olazy, says he
was temporary ef an agricultural
'paper ithere.".' Were rather
marked, by Isis unusual overflowing hu
mor, 'rather • than by any'exhibition ' of
knowledge of the subject. The follow
ing extracts will serve 'as specimens of,
his style and matter in ng,ricultnral writ
ing
"Tn• ips should never be pulled: It
' t . ...them.. It is much better to send
a boy. up, and let him shako the tree.

"The guano it a fins bird, but great
care is necesgary in rearing it. It should
not be hppeirted earlier than June; nor
later Altaic September. In the winter it
should be kept in a warm place, where
it can hatch out its yopng.
"It is evident that we are to have a
backward wagon for grain. Therefore,
it will be- well for -the farmer to begin
setting out his corn-stalks and planting
his, buckwhcat cakes in July instead of
August.
" Concerning the- Pumpkin.--This
berry_ is a favorite with-the natives of the
interior of New England, who prefer it
to the goosberry for the making of fruit
cake, and who likewise give it the pre fer
once over the raspberry for feeding cows,
as being more filling and fully as satisfy
ing.- The pumpkin is the only esculent
of the orange family that will thrive in
the North, except the gourd and one or
two varieties of the squash! But the
custom of planting it in the front-yard
with the shrubbery is fast going out of
vogue, for it is now generally conceded
that the pumpkin, as a shade-tree, is a
failure.
How Goon FARMERS SAVE MONEY.
--They take good papers and read them.
- They keep account of operations.
They do not leave their _implements
scattered over the farm, exposed to
snow, rain and heat.
They repair their tools and buildings
at a proper time ; and do• not suffer a
subsequent threefold expenditure Of time
and money. They use their money ju
diciously, and they do not attend auction
Onlki to purchase all kinds of, trumpery
beNkise. it is cheap.
They see that their fences are well re
paired, and that their cattle are not
'gracing in the meadows, of grain fields,
or orchards.
They do not refuse. to make correct
experiments in a -small way of many new
things. . . '
They plant their finittrees well, care
for them, and of c'onrse get good crops.
They practice economy by giving their
stock good shelter during the winter ;
also good food, taking all that is unsound,
half rotten or mouldy out. 1 .
They do -not keep tribes of \ cats, -or
snarling dogs around their premises who
eat more in a mouth then they are worth
in a whole lifetithe. •.
Lastly, they read the advertisemen,ts,
know what is going on; and frequently
savo money by it. - 1,.•
Successful farming is made by atten
tion to little things. The farmer who
does his best, earns his money with best
appreciation, and uses it with best re
sults. Such men aro the silk of the
earth: .
THE CELERY Cnom—We held to the
same opinion now that we have fortwom
ty-flve years; that •as.a rule the trans:
planting of celery is deferred to toolate
a period. In nine cases out of ton there
is not time enough allowed to filly de
velop the crop. Will not the experience
of nearly every ono affirm this ; another
mistake is shown in setting the plants
too near the surface of the ground, ren
dering the bahking- up difficult and
deficient. We greatly prefer the old
way in vogue since the first cultivation
of celery in this country; it is to dig '
trenches full ten inches deep ; stir up
the subsoil thoroughly; mix with plenty
of short, well rotted yard manure ; set
the plants; water twice a thy ; cover
with boards to protect from sun, six or
seven hours a day,- say from 9 to 4, until
the plants are well established ; then ap
ply manure daily, id the absence of rain,
until filling in and banking up of the
earth begins. .
The plants for early use—for the lat
ter part of November and through De
cember—should be set the last, week in
June ; and all the rest by the middle o'
July.
Many persons cultivate celery i n double
or tripple rows. This does well enough
were 'ground is scarce ; but where there
is plenty of room single rows are to be
preferred, even though the plants are set
closer togethei than usual. We, have
had celery by the single row system three
feet and a half in length by the end of
September.— Germantoil7 11. Telegraph.

mind to kill it, when I tried the follow—

ono end in the calf's month, the other in
the milk. This it would suck, and as
soon as the cob fell from its mouth, it
went . diving around the pail tepid it,
and in a few minutes began to drink.
ibpeated this operation but twice, when
'Hook the cob away, and it drank along,
and has done so ever since. The'calf is
