AGRIoIiLTUR4 COLUMN [Comxnustications for this dopitrtment, if not of too grant lonith,..aro resjpot: fully requested.—En.] FARM NOTEY FOB JUEB. The month' of Juno is the , month of life - Mad griaiith` - above' all Other‘ arid it becomes the tiller - of the earth to look to it that his crops are allowed the free dom of the soil, and that marauding in terlopers are kept out Of his cultivated ground. 'lf grass and woods be `per-. mitted now to take possession 'of the l grounds allotted to corn',' tobacco and other useful craps, his season's 'operaL: tions •may prove a . failure; This may very readily happen and often does hap pen to inexperienced cultiVators. Should a long spell _A' rainy Weather coin° in June, when grass Wilt Lite and grow without roots almost, - Unless take care to cut off the 'enemy in his 'first move ment, it, may be long before he brings him - under, and not atall, perhaps, with- out serious loss before it be done.* I= Keep the ground thoroughly worked from the start. Should the field become grassy, extra work with the plow will be required to got it again in order, and with considerable increase of labor, only a diminished er_op will be made ; but be sides this, thiSre is the• further reason, the necessity of working the crop early, to avoid the cutting Chid tearing up of the - foots in midsummer, wheii the bear ing season is at hand, and every rootlet has its special office of feeding a grain of corn. For the ordinary working of corn to destroy young grass and keep the surface open to the influence of the atmosphere, only shallow working is needed, and the work should be done expeditiously with a cultivator which does not run deeply. The crop should be thinned as soon as it is safe from worms and birds. ,FEEDING WHOLE GRAIN TO CATTLE.— It; is an expensive system of economy to feed whole grain to any kind of animals. All kinds of kernel grain aro provided with a tough hull or skin, which the di gestive powers of animals will not dis solve; consequently, if the skin is not broken before the grain enters the stein aeli, * the kernels will usually pass off with the droppings, without affording the animal that swallowed the grain any more nourishment than fragments of • wood of the same size. During the month of August last, the writer procured a lot of horse manure for top dressing for strawberry plants, and in a few days after the mulch was spread aplund the plants, the broken kernels of oats vegetated so that the entire surface was as green as a; lawn. ' The fact shoWed, conclusively, that much of the grain had never afforded the animals that swallowed it 'any-nourish ment at all. Young horses having ,sound and sharp teeth, will sometimes crush every kernel, but old horses with poor teak will often swallow half their mess of oats without breaking the skin of the kernels. When mills aro distant,. and people will insist on feeding whole graiu, it will always be found advantageous to soak the grain at least_ twenty-four -- hours before feeding it. SOWING CORN: FOR FODDER.—A cor espandent—of--T-118--Rwrat--/Fsio—Yorksr- adopts a mode of furrowing for the drills, by-using two horses and.a common plow, the ground being first plowed and har rowed in the ordinary manner. The first furro‘v , extends around the whole field at the outside. For the next, the near horse walks in the furrow, and the team continues going around until the centre is reached and the whole field fur rowed. This operation leaves about eighteen - incheabetween-theldrillshir weight of the plow alone will cause it.to sink about three inches, which is deep enough. The corn is strewed along the, furrows, by hand, at the rate of .three! bushels per acre, and then covered by . harrowing. A one-horse cultivator with the side teeth removed is passed between the rows when the corn is 'up, killing the weed and vidging . ;tho rows. The nearness of the rows to each other would. doulAless give larger crops hy this modethan "lien they are three feet apart.. THE CABBAGE FLEA.—This destine tive little insect is becoming very abun dant, and considerable care is required to,keep it in chock. Young cucumbers, cabbages, tomatoes, and several kinds of vegetables, aro Its natural food, and while the plants aro young this ilea does them much injury, eon if it lees not entirely destroy. We have, tried many remedies, but none have been so effectual in destroying or driving away the pest as dry wood ashes scattered over the, plants in the morning, while wet with dew. Two or three applications have usually heen suf ficient. There are several species of these insects (Hattica4 that infest our gardens, but, the small ono that infests vegetable plants can.bo,easily controlled with ashes or, lime, applied as directed. —hearth and Hozng, A GREAT FARMER'S MAEIM9.—TIIO successful life of a Mr. Jacob Strewn, the prince of Amoricanfermers, iik,attrilute4 to the close . obsorvanco of the following maxims, originated by hinisolf When you wake up, do not ''roll over; . but roll out,' It will give you time to' ditch all your sloughs, break their; bar row them, and sow with timidly; and red clover.
