TILE STUDENTS OF DICKINSON COLLEGE ON THE WAN PATH Our usually quiet town has been in- tensely excited during the past ton dayd. The celebration of the ratification of the Fifteenth Amendment has been followed by a rebellion,of the students of Dickin son College. We live in an ago when events of moment crowd upon us thick ‘ and fast. The rights of men is the groat problem to be defined by the People .of our day. An application was made, on Tuesday, the twenty-sixth ultimo, by the Soph more and Junior 'classes of the College, to some of the professors, asking to be excused from recitations, in- order that they might witness the celebration of the day. Their request was refused by the professors, as - they allege,, because the Easter vacation had ended but a short time previous ; and for the further rea son that all such applications should bb made by the students to the' Faculty as a body, and not to any ono of the profes sors individually. The students thought their request should have been granted, and that the refusal of the professors was tyrannical, and they absented them selves' from their recitations. The Fac nity met the following evening'; and as sessed minus marks on the offenders for Li err absence from recitations, and bo e-tuse thiy , considered a conspifferliffil been formed by the students for that purpose. The students, think ing their punishment excessive, and al leging that no such conspiracy had been formed, called a meeting, and ap minted a committee, to confer with the teulty, innl to insist on a rednetivn of ti.e minus marks 'to the munber. .pre scribed by the college statute, fur simply au absence from, recitation without ex cuse. On the facts of the case, and on the construction of the statute, and the powers of the Faculty under. them, the students and Faculty disagreed. The matter was earnestly, and elaborately discussed by the constitutional lawyers of the opposite parties, without any_cOn elusion being arrived at. On Saturday came the crisis. The stu ilet ts _met_ in_Alte_even,44,44,44.4aT 1 1: 1WiiWeElffltie . ; Wriuhr no t attend to any further duties, until their differences - with the professors wore ad- justed," and' appointed a committee tn. give information of their action. The replied„that " recitations would be had as usual, arid that all parties re fusing to attend would be. suspended .from-their 'connection-with-the-College.' Recitations were not attended by the two classes, and they _were suspended until September, with orders to leave the town by Tuesday evening, which time, on the application of the students, was extended until Wednesday. On those days the students, to the number of thir ty-five, left for their homes. • The executive committee of the board of trustees had a conference withtbe.sta dents on Monday evening, but their efforts, as mediators, were ineffectual. The students were irrepressible. Young America could not be squelched. The rights of the weakest must, be respected. The Faculty would not recoils - from their construction of their 'statutes. The College might Luther, and the elements melt, but their decision must stand. Dignity and consistency, alike, de ' madded it. Were it not that the revolt tray have an evil effect upon the habits of the stu dents, and the temporary check there may be to the prosperity of the College, we could not but regard the whole matter as sujoemely funny. We have seen the marching and coun terti irchho:stuilents in the camp us;, their earnest conferences on the street corners, and in the cigar stores of our borough, their vehement and Edo quent.harangues to enthusiastic hearers, inflie colleg,w - chapel . ; and their yellow badges of Rebellion, and the like ones that were worn by their fair admirers of the town, on the on,' hand ; and the ear nest faces of the Faculty, who, althMigh nervous, and excited, yet determined that the rebels must submit, and the'au tlb.wity of the College be maintained at all hazards, on thie other, almost led us Co suppose that a burlesque on the early days of the Great Rebellion was being acted for the entertainment of our citi zent. IVe hope, that after careful thought, the students who have left the College will return to their places, that all differ ences between them and the Faculty will be speedily ffealeil, and that as the end of the Great Rebellion in our country !parked the starting point•of a career of prosperity hitherto 'unknown,. so, too, may our Colljge be the more prosperous in the future lot the present little dis tnrbance within her walls.'
