Heavens. According to previously
mado announcement, this , day had been
set apart by our colored, citizens, as a
day 'of general celebration, andrejoicing
in bettor of the ratification of.-Abo Fif
teenth Amendment. From early morn
our atre'ets presented a lively appearance,
and the arrangements which had been ge,,
ing on for some days received abasty com
pletion. Around the Court House were
ieattered groups of Democratic politi
cians, discussing the unusual event, and
prophesying that net more than c one hun
dred would be in line, attd the whole
thing prove a failure. In fact, about ten
o'clock this seemed probable, as very
few colored persona were seen upon' the
streets; but it is easily explained by the
statement that at that time they were
gathered in their several places of wor
ship, returning thanks to Almighty God
for the blessings and privileges vouch
safed them, and invoking His protection
and blessirigif - on their future actions.
The Committee of Arrangements had
chosen , North street, between Pitt and
West streets, as the place of forming the,
procession ; and as the hour of one p. m.
drew nigh, groups of men, mounted' and
on'foot, could -be seen wending their
way to the appointed place..
ORDER OF PROCESSION
Mr. Joseph Howard acted as 'Chief
Marshal, with Messrs. Simons and Jor

little difficulty was experienced in form.

THE ROUTE.

the streets, throughout the entire route.

assembled at this point: All over the

BANNERS, FLAGS, &C
Throughout the entire length of the
processipii the Stars and Stripes pre
dominated. From many private resi
dences flags, wreathe, and portraits of
men, distinguished for their labors in the
cause of freedom, were displayod'.
The banner which attracted the most
atteutien was the ono hearing the fol
lowing inscription : "The twenty-nine
States that ratified 'the Fifteenth Amend
ment to the Constitution." This banner
was surmounted by the American Eagle,
the badge of freedein, and our national
emblem. A banner draped, in mourning
was carried, inscribed, "In memory of
Dr. 7tteClintock. ;- Persecuted for our
sake." This banner. was particularly
appropriate; from the fact that it was in
this town that Dr. 'McClintock stood
manfully Up in defence and protection of
tho colored race. ()ther banners wore
carried with these inscriptions : "We
are coming." "Wo will vote for the
men that voted for us." "Lincoln_com-
