were examined in the different branches,
'which they had studied, and, from the

taken great pains to advance them. The .
examination throughout was highly
creditable, and would* be an honor to
some of our higher institutions of learn

HYDROPHOBIA.
From our correspondent at Sterrett, Gop•]
. ..
. . . ,
DEAR HERALD.—A. case; of this most
alarming, and much to be dreaded mal
ady occurred a few days ago in Perry
county. VI °. victim is a little girl, about
12 or 13 years of age, "the daughter of
St6PhenLosb, residing about three mile 43
east of Landisburg, on the Waggoner's,
.Gap Road, -leading to Carlisle. - It hp
nears 'that - that section has bCen infested
with rabid dogs during the winter, by
which it is supposed that a cat, belong
ing to Mr. Losh was bitten. Mr.-Loch
had noticed, for some-time -provigns to
the occurrence here narrated, that his
:cat exhibited signs of gig mad, yet'
not altogether believing this to be the
case he allowed. the .dangerous 'animal
free liberty among his family, which re-
Suited -in the child being scratched by
...,
tbe'eat, while raging in the Ihst tit that
it was attacked with. Mr. Losh then
despatched the animal, which had proven
most conclusively, by its actions, 10-hav
ing been 'mad. The terrible thotight
that his' little girl was liable to suffer
this agonizing death, aroused him to
seek any relief that might be had. After
failing, however, to discover: anything
that would promise a cure, he - was ad
ised, by a friend, to consult with George
V. B. :•-toey, living near Sterrett's Gap,
L
unibef laud county, who has in his pos
session as a family right, the original re
ceipt for the cure of the bite of a rabid,
or mad animal, discovered by Ids grand
fatherthe Rev. Dr. William Story, of
Lebanon, Pa., about SO years ago. The
child received treatment from Mr. Story,
and is now doing well." Although the
country is. at the present time, flooded
with bogus receipts, purporting to be
the original ono of Dr. Story. And
that they are bogus, is plainly proVen
from the fact of their failing, in every
instance, to cure this dteadful malady.
Whilst, on the other hand, there .are
scores who will testify to the true merits
of the original Story cure. It may -be
remembered, however, that Dr. William
Story, in his time, had. this discovery
Patented, after Which,. we learn- fermi
'family connections; he offered it to the
Legislature or vama, or
benefit of the State, nt $12,000. Ile
was, however, refused this. amount, but
was offered $8,000; which 'sum he re
fused to take. We are informed, by
some of the family., that the proceedings
of this transaction can still be seen on
the records at Harrisburg. irthis be an
infallible cure fOr the bite .of • a mad clog,
$lO,OOO or $15,000 would be a small sum
to pay for it, for the benefit of the State,
that all might have it nt hand in the hour
of emergency, and afllietibn. Money is
went, and appropriated for purposes
that are not half so beneficial to the peo
ple as a remedy like' this would .be.
Scores of valuable lives might be saved,
annually, as well as oceans of trouble
'averted. It would be no more than just
and right, for our Legislature toappro
priate a respectable sum of money for
the divulgement of this secret, and the
right to publish it for the benefit of any
who may fall i.iicenns to 'this alarming
malady. If there be a Certain cure, ono
that-has-stood-the-test-for-upwards-of-80
years, , for hydrophobia, why should it
not be purchased, at any price, for the
temporal Salvation of those who may fall
victims:

In Lancaster city the vagrants have
been put to breaking stone on the streets,
with what success the following from
The Express will show: Some of the
'newspapers in the neighboring towns are
discussing our experiment of puttingille
vagrants, committed to prison, to work
breaking stone. They naturally jump
to the conclusion that, because on the
first attempt a' number refused to work
and stampeded, the project is a failure.
The Readiap, pnies,• looking at the ques
tion in this light, regards the failure a,
success, inasmuch. as the lazy fellows run
off and the county is thus rid 6f them.
Ths.Tlll4o9 therefore suggests that "every
town and, township should' hate a stone
heap for the benefit of tliese loafers ;"
that " - such treatment would soon' make
them scarce." -If every town-and town
ship should adopt the suggestion, and tlo
loafers constantly run away, wo appre
hend that thero would not be Mitch im-
Prevenient, as the vagrants would simply
be driven from one . Point to another.

connected with the subject is .7hothei
the cost of watching them and supplying
the implements will not, in the long run,
amount to' more than the profit derived
from their : labor. When ,this . point is
settled, .the practicability .of Vagrant
labor can be More fully cliscussed.
