„legation in Funkstown agreeably cur
piised their new Pastor, the Bev:- J.
Hassler, on - Saturday last,' by making
a very encouraging invasion upon the
Parsdnage in Boonsboro', shape of
such things as flourOunn,_butter, eggs„
eurn, potatoes, apples, dried fruit,
canned frnit,. and other things-necessary
fur the comfort and well being of the
minister and his family. When the table
was all ready and set (the ladies carefully
bringing their provisions with them,) thB
Pastor was warmly greeted by a very ap
propriate addres - s by Wpm. 11. Knode,
csq., which was bristly responded to by
the pa4to•. The whole occasion passed
off very Illeasahy; all returned to their
homes in thmevening, quite deligted with
their first invasion visit to the Parsonage
of theirnew—Fres Press.
'On. Wednesday morning last, quite 'a
serious "smash " occurred on, the
Cumberland Valley Railroad, at the
eastern side of Carlisle, at the junction
of the Cumberkital Valley and South
Mountain roads. The second freight
t Min East was under pretty full headway
at that point, when a break block on one
of the f.irwardlUars becalm detached'and
fell upon the track ; the ear immediately
in rear of this one was thrown from the
track and one of its axles broken. Thu

the rear cars, to the number of sixteen
.or seventeen, mounted into a confuseki
idle of broken bodies, tracks, axles, Hour.,
grain, &c. Most of the ears were li.erally

Fortunatelyibc conductor and brakemen
leaped from the traiif in time to escape
all injury.' The track was torn up for
some distance, and that, with the other
debris of the wreck so obstructed the
road ,that the passenger trains, cast and
west, had to stop ait thet' point; transfer
passengers, baggage, mails, &c., and
return, and freight trains cease running
until the force of wreckers, ahledvby a
number of our citizens, had cleared away

We had the honor of a call, a few days
ago, from dur friend and former towns
man, James E. Noble, Esq. Mr. Noble
is now-a citizen df Virginia, and a mem
ber of the Legislature. Upon his re
moval to the Old Dominion, Mr. Noble
following the instincts and teachings of
his early life, attached himself to the
Radical Republican . party, and has ever
since been laboring persistently and in
telligently-to scenic for his adopted State
the blessings of peace and good Govern
ment through liberty and justice. Rec
ognizing his worth his fellow citizens of
the Radical party selected him as their
candidate for the Legislature, \and lie
was triumphantly elected over his rebel
opponent. Mr. Noble speaks hopefully
•of the future of Virginia, and asserts
that all that is necessary to her prosperity
is the overthrow of the pro rebel pally
and the success of the:Radical Republi
can.

On Friday hist, 311.. John Seeley., of
this borough, while assisting to unload
lumber from a car at Loucks' mill, in
Spring Garden township, was accidently
struck on the side of the face and temple,
from the effect of which be died on Sun
(ley morning. The • employees, engaged.
in unloading the car, had all been warned
by Mr. Loncks to be careful not td put
tnemselveit in the way of danger; but St
seems that Mr, Seeley did .nottake the
necessary precaution, for When the girder
was taken off lie was observed to fall,
and on examination Was found to be
struck as already mentioned. Tle re

after Which lie - walked into the mill and
tiller remaining there for sonic t Line came
to town and consulted 'a physician and
then went. to his home in West Philadel-
phis street. No serious consequences
was apprehended until Saturday night,_

End," in which your correspondent, after
speaking of the scaricity of ice this sum
! mel, asks whether there is not enterprise

the erection of an ice house sufficiently_
large to supply the needs of our people.
To quiet the apprehensiong 'of "South
End," , and all other anxious folks, I ask
you to state that our enterprising fellow
citizen, Mr. David 'Rhoads, has just com
pleted a very convenient and commo
dious ice house which will he filled dur
ing the winter for the delectation of our
people next summer. The new house is
located at the corner of College street
and Waggoner's road; its dimensions are
30 by 30 feet, 10 feet in height. This
house will he filled from a pond of pure
spring water, supplied by a stream well
knoWq, as the Indian, Doctor's run, and
wo fell sinetit will furnish an abundMit

Joseph Ritner, the venerable el:-Gover
mor of this Commonwealth, and for
'more than 40 years a resident of this
county. died, on Saturday last, at the
residence of Iliss•son, in South Middleton
township. Ile was horn in Berks coun
ty, on the twenty-lifth day of Marelt,'
1780, and, was therchire in his ninetieth
year when he died. • Although Governor
Hitner has been in retirement for mo
than the average life of a generation of
