    PAM:iv/ziplista Politics.
According to'their. Own papers; the
Philadelphia Democracy is in a bad fix.
We clip the following froth the B:tin
t/ay Mercury;wlSich seems to be a very
fair reflection of the general feeling
among the intelligent portion of the
party in the pity
b I emocra 10 onventions
in this city last week were eminently
discreditable inallrespeete. Firom bodies
composed of the worst .material, noth
ing but the worst possible action could
be reasonably expected. With an ex
ception or two, a weaker ticket than
that presented could hardly -have been
made, while the disorder, violence, dis
honesty, and blackguardism which
marked the proceedings of every one
of the nominating bodies, but especially
theft° -of the , City and County Con
vention, were perhaps, 'never exceeded,
if equalled, on- any similar occasion.
'This is particularly remarkable inso
much as it was never before more de
-sizable thatthe Conventioes oftheparty
should be rightly constituted and
their conduct harmonious, respectable
and. intelligent. The Democratic pa
pers, too, all earnestly exhorted to a.
choice of proper delegates, regularity
of procedure in the performance of the
trust reposed in them, and the best
practicable nominations, The result
shows how utterly vain where all such
considerations and appeals. As usual
the important business of selecting
candidates for the party was commit,-
ted to persons having neither the sense:
nor the virtue so requisite for that. dtf•
tyi It would be both an insult and
a lie to say that they represent the
mass of the Democracy . in this city.
They really represent nobody but
themselves and the wretched ' roughs'
and rowdies who elected them-as -del-,
egatetr and who invariably compose
the entire constituency of the nomina
ting conventions of both political par
ties in Philadelphia. Nor is there any
good grounds to hope for better re •
stills hereafter from like bodies, - so
chosen,. so organized, and_ so managed.,
This is especially , true when it is seen
th - aithe7p - apers of, both - political par
ties, after vainly protesting against
the repetition of past irregular
ities, follies and corruptions, and con
conjuring to the adoption of purer and
wiser action, not only acquiesce in all
that is done in defiance of their expos
tulation, however, outrageous and dis- -
graceful,.biit actually applaud the had
work of bad men as if. it were indeed
altogether worthy of every decent citi
zen's endorsements. 'We confe'ss that
we are not of those who can urge deco
rous and prudent action to-day, and
coral:pod fraud, indecency, and vie :
lenclf to-morrow. Without saying that
the recent-Republiban conventions and
behavior were any better, we will-and
do say that the Dbmocratic conventions
and their condtict were every op
posite of what the people had wished
and demanded...that they should be
and we arc moreover sincere and in
dependent enough to declare that no
such persistent'and audaci6us violation
of; .every principle of party policy and
public decency shall any longer receive
our toleration. The fact of a once
great and glorious party, with great
prineipls at • stake, being not only
ruled but ruined IT devils in human
shape, is enough to 'make every neon ,
table citizen sink oven of the name of
Democracy,.
