We are glad the'subject'of the com
ing census is being so extensively die
cussed,_lnsteatiALwaiting until after it
is taken for criticisni. The last report
was .-yery,, Oefectitti,' though, probably
less:Se than the.:precedinz reports.
We, ,are , told that : ip .18 . 60 - there was
fem . :thirty to forty dollars per 'head
more wealth in Misr than hi, either
Pennsylvani!,, New York 1 '
The facts-can be taken',prettY aeon
rately, provided the requisiMattention
and_ability'be given to it.: In addition
to, what his been usually *reported, we
would like to see some other important
facts. For, example, let us • have a
schedule to show bow generally the
comfOrts of life are distributed among
the. people : • • • •
,1. How many , families are homeless
and reside in rented tenements.
2. How many, are employed in the
several trades and manufactures.
3. What are the wages received
4. How many needle women there
are, and what their remuneration. •
5. :ow marrgitia: elfirtflrhtrittile
to twenty acres. in`extent. . _ _
6. How many fauna of from 20 . to
50 acrus. •
7. How. many offrom 60 to. 100
acres.
. -
8. now many of _from 200 to 50.0
acres.
9. - How many of over 500 acres in
extent.
- •
10 How many non-resident owners
of land, and what quantities they hold.
11. How much capital is invested
in the several branches of business and
what are the profits.
•
12.- How-much do the-people expend
in spirituous and fermented liquors.
Information of this sort would.tbrow
mare light - Upon the social condition of
the_ people than all other facts that are
taken. Why not have regard to hu•
inanity as -well its to those imposing
interests that dazzle by their magni
ficence, and yet may be oppressive in
their burden upon those -whose toil is
the Joutidation-and the support of all
things human?—llarrisburg Tel.
