Itseams that two.'men, 'William Wier
and his son EdWard,.Were left imoharge
'of the engine during the latter part of the
night. Unknown to them, the stop-cock
in theyipe,,Which conveys tho steam from-,
the engine boiler to the-rotany-rag boiler,
WAS turned off; permitting no steam to pass.
Eianaining the steam kuago of the rag .
boiler, and seeing that it indicated only
about twenty pounds of steam, Mr. 'Wier
told his son to' make up, the fire, as the
steam was going down. - He again looked.
at the steam gua6s of the rotany boiler,
and seeing. the steam no higher,,he again
told hie son to'stir up' t
after this.ttiey disdovered that the engine
boiler had on a' fearful head of steam, and
both became alarmed, and were in the act
of opening the safety valve, or providing
some outlet' for the steam, when the ex
plosion occurred. The end of the boiler
was forced out through the building, and
- Carried - a - distance - of - two - or three-hundred
yards, beyosid the residence of Mrs. Mul
lin. The engine house, which-was a frame
building, was entirely demolished, scarce
ly pieces remaining together, and the
debris being scattered over the surround 7
ing fields for a great distance. The paper
making room, which contained valuable'
machinery, .was shattered; 'and the ma :
chinery greatly damaged. 'The boiler it
self was thrown into the air. arid turned
- completely - around - , — landing - somo - twenty
feet from its old position:
Weir and his son were both seriously
in:ml one ofthem doubtless mortally.
The old gentleman was seriously cut about
the bead . and in the abdomen ; his face, .
neck and bands scalded and burned almost
ton crisp. Young Weir had-the back part
of his skull crushed in, and was also cut,
bruised and scalded about his face and
bBdy. Strange to say, he remained con
spious. - Dr. Kieffer was called in, and
found a portion of the skull driven into).lie
brain, and the brain oozing out. The main
artery' at the back of the skull was cut„ - and
from all appearances there was copious in
ternal hemorrhage. Ho was placed under
the influence of chloroform, while the ope
. ration Was being performed ; and after it
was over, and -since,-says he suffers no
pain, and remains entirely conscious.
The escaping steam and sediment seem
eo.to sweep down every thing in its way,
like a tornado. Trees were twisted and
torn from the earth, fences demolished, -
and : havoc spread far and wido. The dam
age to machinery is variously estimated at
from - 58,00M0510,000. - -- Volunteer. - -

They will not cure incurable diseases, but they will
often prevent a certain class of disorders from be.

From tho Medical Profossion
ILnrnnn & Co.—Gentlemen 1 In reply to yours o
the 22d Inst., I would say that I have used Dr
Shever'S Tonic Herb Bitters extensively in my prac

any that I have found it to possess remaralcale ein
e acy In cases of Dyspepsia, Indigestion, Lose of Nor
voun Energy,:asi well as Fever and Ague, Diarfhue o
Headache and otheFiliseasus proceeding from,a die
ordered stomach ; and especially was it proved of in
estimable value in general debility of the system
when other tonic medicines have failed to prod..
the desired affect.
Though reluctant to appear as recommending any
particular advertised medicine, a sense of duty to
the public and the medical faculty, will not allow
me to withhold nay tebtintouy to the merits of the

FIRST MORTGAGE BONDS
- Thum groat onterpriaa la'approwehingreompletlati ---
with d rapidity that astonishes the world. Over
fifteen (1500) hundred miles have been built by two
(2) powerful companies; the Union , Pacific Railroad,
beginning at Omaha, building west, and the Oen.
ral Pacific Railroad 'beginning at Sacramento, and
building east, until the two roads BMW Meet. Lam
than two hundred and fifty miles remain to be '
built. The' reater part of the Interval le now
grad
ed, and It Is reasotiably expected that the through
connection between - San Francisco and Now 'Lark
will be completed by July 1.
As the amount of Government aid given 'to each
is dependent upon the length of toad each shall
build, bo th companies are prompted to great efforts
to secure the construction and control of what,
when completed , will be ens and the may gravid
Railroad Line ammocling the Atlantis and Pacific

One Ilunared and Ten Million Dollars ($11e,000,-
000) In money have already been expended by the
two powerful companies engaged in thin great en.
Depth°, and they will speedily complete 'the por
tion yetto_behuilt.—When the United Eitateo GOT.
arnmeht build It necessary to secure the construc
tion of the Pacific Railroad, to develop and protect
its own Interest, it gave the companies authorized
rpoody completion b4ond a doubt. Tho Govern
ment aid may be briefly summed up at follows:
First. The right of way and all norm tary Ombra
And atone from public domain.
lecond..lt makes a donation ot -12,800 acres of
land to thoplie, which, when the road is completed,
will amount to twenty-tlyee "Million (23,000,000)
acres, and ail of It within twenty (20) miles of
railroad.
Third. It loans the -comp miss fifty million dol
lars (P 60,000,000), for which it tahtli a second lien.
The Gevernmont has already loaned the Union
Pacific Railroad twenty-four million and fifty
eight thousand dollars (t 24,058,000, and to the
Central Pacific Railroad seventeen million six bun.
Bred and forty-eight thousand (17,640,000), amount
ing in all to' forty one million seven hundrodiund
six thousand dollars (811,700,000).
The Companies are permitted to ihsue their own "
First Mortgage Bonds-to the same amount "all they
receive from the United states; and no more. The
companies have sold to permanent Investors about
($40,000.000) forty million dollars of the First
Mortgage Bonds. The companies have already
paid in (including not earnings not divided, grants
from State of California, and fiacramento city amb
San Francisco), upwards of ($25,000 000) twenty.
Ilia million dollars capital stock.
In considering this question It mita bo remem

road le contmotelfOr, and the- largest portion-paid
Mr and now delivered on the line of the 'Onion'
Nellie Railroad and the_Contral .Pacific Railroad;
and that the guiding is almost :finished.
WHAT RESOURCES CAVE Tlt COMPANIES
First. They will receive feom the Government as
the road Progressee about $9,000,000 additional..
Second. They can issue-their owh First Mortgage
Donde for abouts9,ooo,ooo additional.
Third. The companies now hold' almost all the
land they have up to this time received from the
Government; upon the completion of the road they
will have received in all 23,000,000 acres, which at
81,50 per acre would be worth $31,500,000.
In addition to the above the net earnings of
the roads and additional capital, if necessary, could
be called in to finish the road.
No ono has over expressed a don that se soon
