AMERICAN WA\TCHES,
Made at WALTfiABI, MASS.
IS THE BEST.
TT is made on the best principle. Its
IT
frame is composed of SOLID PLATES. Nojar can
interfere with the harmony of its working and no sud
den shock can damage Its machinery. Every piece is
made and finished by machinery (itself famous fue - its*
novelty, es well as for its effectiveness) and is there
fore properly made. The watch is what all mechanism
should be—ACCURATE, SIMPLE, STRONG AND
ECONOMICAL. Except some high grades, too coatis
for general use, foreign watches are chiefly made by
women {and boys. Such watches are composed of sev
eral hundred pieces, screwed and rivited together, and
require constant repairs to keep them iu any kind of
order. All persups who have carried "snores," "lepines"
and "English Flaunt Levers," are perfectly well aware
of the truth of this statement.
At the beginning of our enterprise, more than ten
years ago, It was our first object to make a thoroughly
good low priced watch for the million to take the place
of those foreign impositions—the refuse of foreign fac
tories—which wore entirely unsaleable at home and
perfectly worthless everywhere.
.How well we have accomplished this may bo under- I
stoci4roni the fact, that after so satiny yeses of public,
trial, we now make MORE THAN HALF OF ALL THE
WATCHES SOLD IN THE UNITED STATES, and that
no others have ever given such universal satisfaction.
While this department of our business is continued
with increased facilities for perfect umic, we are at pre
sent engaged in the manufacture of watchaa of the
very 111011 EST GRADE KNOWN TO CHRONOMETRY,
unequalled by anything hitherto made by ourselves,
and unsurpassed by anything made in the svothb
For this purpose we have the amplest facilities. Wo
have erected an addition to our mein buildings ex
pressly for this branch of our business, and have fill
ed It with the best workmen In our service. New ma
chines and appliances have been constructed, which
perform their work wills consummate delicacy no ex.
actness. The choicest and most approved materials
only are used and we challenge comparison between
this grade of our work and the finest imported taro
nometers. We do not pretend to sell our watches for
ess money than foreign watches, but we do assert with
out fear of contradiction that for the same money our
product is incomparably superior. All our watches,
of whatever grade, are fully warranted and this war
r.i lace is go:A at all times against us Or our agents In
all parts of the world.
CAUTION.—The public are. cautioned to buy only
of respectable dealers. All persons selling counter
feits will be prosecuted.

AMERICAN ORGANS
From "Godcy's Ladiek Book" February,
1866.)
REED ORGANS, &o
THE following remarks and sugges
tions relative to this immensely popular Instru
ment will doubtless interest and prefit very many of
our readers, we commend the article to their careful
perusal:—
A hundred and one makers of Organs, Cottage, Par
lor, Cabinet, American,43ebool Organs, etc etc., aro
each claimlog to make the best Instrument in the
world. Beingsernparatively a new instrument as at
present conetfucted, wo are convinced the public are
much loss, capltble of judging of its merits. or domerite,
than of tenet oilier instruments. If there is really an
essential Aillifrodcp in them, if there aro some excel
lent anci some worthless ones, the public should have
some criterion for judging of then., some facts which
will enlighten them. Wo cheerfully r oncede the space
for this article knowing that there is hardly a family,
or church, or school in all the land, but Is more or lees
interested in r his topic. We are also aware of Its be
ing a great misfortune, a real calamity. to any of them
to purchase an interior or worthless Organ, ruinous to
good pkying, and often a source of much annoyance
and vexation. We know this article to emanate irom
a candid and Intelligent source, and thus we give it to
our readers.
The question Is often asked, what are "reed organs?"
Wo adswer, they are, in most cases, nothing In the
world but the old melodeon in disguise. Many of the
so-called organs have the Same bellows, the wine reeds,
and the earn , g• neral Internal arrangement. With the
bellows turned on one to gain room, they have simply
put on a more pretentious exterior and a more high
sounding name. But an organ, to be in reality an or
gan, must have a wind chest or reservoir for air sepa
rate from the bellows, into which wind-chest the reeds
open, and the tone has room to expand and perfect it
soli into the full round tone, similar to the flute or pipe
organ, even, smootb, firm, and mellow ; and this tone
from reeds cannot be obtained in any other way known.
Nothing so annoys a true organist us to have the vol
time of sound swelling and jerking spasmodically with
every variation of force on the bellows, which is always"
the case where the reeds open direct into the bellows
or air passages, instead of a wind chest or sound-box.
And yet soma makers even go so far so to claim this
spasmodic or automatic jerking of the bellows on the
reeds as an excellence, just tie though they did not
know that It must very soon throw the reeds out of
tune, and injure the bellows; and as though it were
not an easier mutter to obtain a much better and nitre
easily managed swell by other methods. The truth
is, any organ , so called, or melodeon which has the
wind acting dirnnidy upon the reed., In nothing morn
nor less tuan a huge accordeou, dress it up as you may.
And when organists and true musicians become awa,e
of the fact that they can obtain those that are organs
in fact as wallas in name, they will buy no more 01 the
objectionable ones. Then again the swell should al
ways be separate and distinct from the bellows, so as
not to be acted on by the hand, or soft blowing, but
convenient so that the player can welt with the knee,
separate from the hands or feet, and then always un
der easy control, to be used ad libitum.
The large divided bellows, or double bellows, Is also
a very important imptovement. Ily this means not
only can the wind be supplied more evenly, but with
far greater ease to the performer, from the fact that
either bellows alone will bu soffit lout for the lighter
melodies, thus permitting the player to 'change about
and rest the feet at will ; than, if the bellows In of
tile requisite large size, and having the wind chest or
reservoir, all will be well. As to the reeds. they must
be scientifically tuned And voiced, or all the othorgood
qualities In tbp world cannot produce a good toned in.
etrumont. Thif inquiry now very naturally arises,

essential and desirable qualities 1 There I only one
