lignorany degree of Doctor of Platlosopky. We congratulato those gentlemen on the positions to Which they have sovernlly r ittr Mined, and feel assured that..their scientific and litoiary attainments will - " n do honor to their Alma Mater, to which thoy'll 4 ave now become permanently attached. For almost a century Dickinson College' has given a literary character to the town, and in ovary State of the Union her grad uates are to be found occupying prominent positions all the elevated walks of life. We trust that the vigorous efforts now being , made to place her on a sure foundation by ample endowments; will ere long enable her to take rank among the most popular Insti tutions of learning in the country. El OE For tile llorald The public examinations of the pupils o f the Mary Institute, interspersed with music, occupied tho forenoon of Monday and Tues day last, and were attended by a number of the-patrons and friends of the scholars, and by a few competent examiners. The pri mary classes in reading and arithmetic, un der Miss L. Lucelin Webster appeared to great advantage; showing that careful at tention is paid to the elementary instruction of the younger pupils. Spoeiniethi of pen manship, composition, maps and drawings from all the classes were freely inspected, very creditable to their respective authors. We understand that the private examina tion of the seniors in Chemistry, Mathemat ics, French, German and Latin was very well sustained by all the class. Certainly the public examination in Astronomy, History, Geometry and the Languiiges did, great hon or to the toncherii'and pupils. Mrs. Smead is well known in this community, the Misses Webster and Miss Donkersley have made many friends and are very highly appreci ated as ladies and teachers. And it is a for tunate thing for the school and the public that their appointment was from the first a permanent one, and that they will return to their duties next session. The musical en tertainment on Tuesday evening was unus ually brilliant and attractive. On Wednesday morning the Commence ment was held in St John's Church. After appropriate services by the Rev. F. J. Clore Rector, and the Rev. Mr. Mores, The Rev. R. .McMurdy, 1)1). LLD, of Washington, D: C., delivered RD address on the " educat ing power of the Bible,' worthy of the oc easion. The Rector's address to the patrons and pupils prescribed his views on sub ject of female education in private, kihristian, not sectarian schools, and announced for next year a post graduate course of lite ra tur e and art study as supplementary to the clas sical and mathematical course prescribed for graduates. Three young ladies received their diplomas; and the school was dismissed until the first Wednesday of September next. .perial Notices WM. REVD .ORGANS, &e. THE following remarks and stigges .,bone relative to this Immensely popular Instrit. ment'will doubtless interest and profit very many of our readers, we commend the article to their carefal perusal:— - - A hundred and ono makers of Organs, Cottage, Par lor, Cabinet, American, School Organs, etc. etc., aro each claimiug to make the best instrument in the world. Being comparatively a new instrument. as at present constructed, we aro convinced the public aro much less capable ofjudging of its merits, or demerits, ,than of moat other Instrumettla. If there' la really an essential difference in them, if' there are some excel lent and some worthless ones, the public Should have some criterion for judging of them, some facts which will enlighten them. We cheerfullyconcede tbespace for this article knowing that there is hardly a family, or church: or school in all the land, but is more or less interested In this topic. We are also aware of its be ing a great misfortune, a real calamity, to any of them to purchase an interior or worthless Organ, ruinous to good playing, and often a source of Much annoyance and vexation. We know this article to emanate from a candid and intelligent source,,and thus we give it to our readers. • ) The question is often asked, what are "reed organs?" We adswer, they aro, in most cases, nothing in the world but the old melodeon in disguise. Many of the so-called organs have the same bellows, the samordedsr; and the same gen.wal internal arrangement. With the bellows turned on edge to gain room, they have simply put on a more pretentious exterior and a more high sounding name. But an organ, to be in leality an or gan, must have a wind cheater reservoir for air sepa rate from the bellows, into which wind-chest the reeds open, and the tone has room to expand and perfect it self into the full round tone, similar to the flute or pipe organ, even, smooth, firm, and mellow ; and this tone from reeds cannot be obtained in any other way known. Nothing so annoys a true organist aft to have the vol. ume of sound swelling and jerking spasmodically with every variation of force on the bellows, which is always the case where the reeds open direct into the bellows or air passages, instead of a wind-chest or sound-box. And yet some makers even go so far as to claim this spasmodic or automatic jerking of the bellows on the reeds as an excellence, just as though they did not know that it Must very soon throw the reeds out of tune, and Injure the bellows; and as though it were not an easier matter to obtain a much better and more easily managed swell by other methods. The truth Is any organ so called, or melodeon which has the Wind acting directly upon the reeds, le nothing morn nor less than a huge accordeen, dress it up as you may. And when organists and true musicians become aware of the fact that they can obtain those that are organs in fact as well as in name, they will buy no more of the objectionable ones. Then again the swell should al ways be separate and distinct from the bellows, so as not to be acted on by the hand, or soft blowing, but convenient so that the playiir can use It with the knee, separate from the hands or feet, and thae always un der easy control, to be used ad libitum. The large divided bellows, or double bellows, Is also a very Important Improvement. By this means not only can the wind be supplied morn evenly, but with far greater ease to the performer, from the fact that either bellows alone will be sufficient for the lighter melodies, thus permitting the player to change about and rest the feet at will ; then, if the bellows 'sof the requisite large size, and having the wind chest or reservoir, all will be well. As to the reads, they must be scientifically t tined and voiced, or all the other good qualities In the world cannot produce a good toned in strument. The inquiry now very naturally arises, where can the organ be procured combining all these essential and desirable qualities P There I- only one possessing all these points, and thatis the AMERICAN °ROAN, made by S D. At IC W. SNITII. of Boston, SIBERIA OTT Wholesale Agent, 581 Broadway, New York. These organs'have a wind-chest extending the whole length of the instrument and so constructed as to act at the same time as a reverberating sound-box or beard, and having the same important relation and part to perform that the sounding-board has to the piano. This feature the makers have patented, and to it are owing In a great measure th. entirety une qualled fullness and richness of tone so highly prized by all who have used these organs. They also have the largest and best divided bellows in use, which is another important feature. No pork of their work in slighted, no expense or pains spared to make the A merican Organs perfect musically, as well as mechan ically, and, judging from the immense sale of them at present. they bid fair to long maintain the proud posi tion they have won by superior merit alone. I must confess that I had an aversion to Patent Medicines !rom the "thousand and one" quack "Bitters," whose only slums seems to be to palm off sweetened and drugged liquor upon the community in a sly way, and the tendency of which, I fear, is to make many a confirmed drunkard.
