Mr. Oohs, Sir, Thd" Morrill's Washing Compound" which you handed td ye, I have fairly tested in doing a large washing to d ; and it gave me perlect satis faction, as it was the 1 rst time I ever washed without a rubber or machine, I got through with my. ashing in one fourth of the time, and with ono fourth of labor that it took me in the old fashioned way. I , would not, upon any account, do witout it. It is one of the greatest wonders of the age, as it eaves time, money and labor, as well as malting the clothes look whiter than by the old process. The effect of the compound upon colored clothing is to brighten the colors Mrs. REBECCA STEWARD. Carlisle, May 5, 1856. Messrs. COLE STUART & Co.. I have tried your Com pound and found it to be all that it is recommended. As for saving time and labor. It gives the clothes a better color and makes them whiter than when washed In the old mode pf washing, al d does not injure the clothoh at all; and as for colored el. their, It sots the colors and brightens them. It is indeed the best soap invention ever got up in this place. I washed a wash of twelve dozen and was but ono liour and a half at them. I did not use m i wash board at all ; they did not require any rubbing at all, Yours, L Messrs COLE, STEW ART, S Co., Gentlemen, I have triedthe " London Washing Compound" you gave to me, in the washing of twenty two pieces, in ono hour. It gave me perfect satisfaction, and fully comes up to all that is said of it. I did not use a wash board, neither did I rub the dothes with my hands. They were as white, clean, and clear as any 1 ever washed in the ordinary way. It sets and brightens the colors of colored clothing. it does not. in the slightest degree Injure the clothes; to use the com pound, lessens labor, saves time, and money. March 40, 1860 AMERICAN From "godey'B,l,lc B d 6 ir ; February, REED ORGANS, &o THE following temarks and sugges tions relative to this immensely popular instru ment will doubtless Interest and profit terry many of our readers, we commend the article-to their careful perusal:— A hundred and ono makers of Organs, Cottage, Par lor Cabinet,- Americad, School Organs, etc etc., are each claiming to make the best instrument in the world. Being comparatively a new Instrument as at present constructed, we aro convinced the public are ranch loss capable of judging of Its merits, or demerits, than of most other Instruments. lf there is really an essential difference in them, if there are some excel- loot ana eome worthleeqouen, the public ehould have some criterion for Judging of - then., some forte which lvlll enlighten them. I%'e cheerfully concede the space for this article knowing that there is hardly a family, or church, or school in all the land, bid is more or leas interested in t his topic. We are aide aware of its be ing a great misfortune, a real calamity, to any of them to purchase an inierior or worthless Organ, ruinous to good pitying, and often a source of much annoyance and vexation. We know this article to emanate from a candid and intelligdnt source, and thus we give it to our readers. The question is often asked, what are "reed organs?" We adswer, they are, in most cases, nothing in the world but tho old melodeon in disguise. Many of the so-called organs have the same bellows, the same reeds, and the same• gen...ral Internal at rangement. With the bellows turned on edge to gain room, they have simply put on a more pretentious exterior and a more high sounding name. But an organ, to be in reality an or gan, must have a wind chest or reservoir for air sepa rate from the bellows, into which wind-chest the reeds open, end the tone has room to expand and perfect it self into the full round tone, similar to the flute or pipe organ, oven, smooth, firm. and mellow ; and this tone from reeds cannot be obtained in any other way known. Nothing so annoys a true organist an to have the vol umo of sound swelling and jerking spasmodically with every variation of force on the bellows, which is always the case where the reeds open direct into the bellows or air passages, instead of a wind chest or sound-box. And yet some makers even go so far as to claim this spasmodic or automatic jerking of tho bellows on the reeds as an excellence, just as though they did not know that it must very soon throw the reeds out of tune, and injure the bellows; and as though It we're not an easier matter to obtain a much better and mere easily managed swell by other methods. The truth is, any organ, so called, or melodeon which has the wind acting directly upon the reeds, is nothing more nor less than a huge aceordeon, dress it up an you may. And when org.nbA..nd !run Immirlano bosoms awn, 0 of the fact that they can obtain those that are organs in fact as well as in name, they will buy no more of the objectionable ones. Then again the swell should al ways be separate and distinct from the bellows, so as not to be acted on by the hand, or soft blowing, but convenient so that the player can use it with the knee, separate from the hands or feet, and thus always un der easy control, to be used ad libitum. The large divided bellows, or double bellows, 113011 SO a very important improvement. By thin means not only can the wind be supplied more evenly • but with far greater ease to the performer, from the fact that . . either bellows alone will he suM, lent for the Whiny melodies, thus permitting the player to change about and rest the foot at will ; than, If the hollows le of the requisite large size, and having the wind chest or reservoir, all will be well. As to the reeds, they must be scientifically tuned And voiced, or all the othergood qualities in the world cannot produce a good toned in• struruent. The Inquiry now very naturally arises, whore can the organ he procured combining all these essential and desirable qualities 1 There I only one possessing, all these points, and that's the AMERICAN Mal/IN, 1111ltil. by 8 D.
