Patent Metallic Sole.
A NEW INVENTION. -
WETTING THE FEET is the most
prolific cause of diseibal and death known to
humanity. It is almost sure to bring on a cold; and
colds, neglected, and often when not neglected, lead to
fevers or to coughs and Wel consumptions. It is in
recognition of this truth that the inventive talent of
the country ha- for years been devising some method,
or attempted to devise it, for keeping the foot dry, and
yet that shouldcriot give inconvenience to the wearer.
Rubber shoes, in one form or another, have hitherto
been our reliance; but it is well known, as among
their many evils, that while they keep the feet di-y
from external moisture, they sweat them over much,
and by thus inducing an .undue tenderness increase a
susceptibility to colds rather than otherwise. They
are also cumbersome to the feet, and withal are. very
expensive. The demand is for ,omething that shall
make the ordinary Boot and Shoe impervious to water,
without affecting their elegance or durability, and, it
possible, without adding sensibly t" the cost of their
manufacture. These, it will be conceded, are most in,-
portal, Matures, and we conscientiously affirm that
they are absolutely attained in the invention here
with presented to the public
Tne Invention consists in inserting between the in
tier and outer sole, when the host is making, a thin
MEI 1.1.1 t. PLATE, exceedingly ductile, combining flexi

ed to the end desired le the additional expense is
merely nominal. It furnishes a perfect barrier against
tile admission of wet or dampness, though the feet may
be exposed Os er 50 long upon net parmitents or damp
ground.

TFIE following remarks and sugges - •
tione relative to thin immensely popular Instru
ment will doubtless Interest and profit very many of
our readers, we command the article to their careful
perusal:—
A hundred and ono makers of Organs, Cottage, Par
lor, Cabinet, American, School Organs, etc etc., are
each claiming to make the best Instrument In the
world.' Being comparatively a new Instrument as at
present constructed, we are convinced the public aro
much less capable of judging of its merits, or demerits,
than of most other instruments. If there is really an
essential difference In them, if there are some excel
lent and some worthless ones, the public should have
some criterion for judging of them, some facts which
will enlighten them. We cheerfully concede the apace
for this article knowing that there is hardly a family,
or church, or school in all the land, but Is more or leas
IntoroatPd in this topic. Wo are also aware of Its be
luga great misfortune, a real calamity, to any of them
to purchase an inferior or worthless Organ, ruinous to
good plt.ying, and often a source of cinch annoyanCe
and vexation. We know this article to emanate from
a candid and inteillgeu t source, and thus we give it to
our readers.
The question is often asked, what are "reed organs?"
We adswer, they are, In most cases, nothing in the
world but the old melodeon In disguise. Many of the
an-called organs have the same hollows, the same reeds,.
and the same general internal arrangement. With the
bellows turned on edge to gain room, they have simply
put on a more pretentious exterior and a more high
sounding name. But an organ, to be in reality an or
gan, must have a win,' chest or reservoir for air sepa
rate from the bellows, into which wind-chest the reeds
open, and the tone has room to expand and perfect it
self into the full round tone, similar to the flute or pipe
organ, even, smooth, firm, and mellow ; and this tone
from reeds cannot inc obtained in any other way known.
Nothing so annoys a true organist as to kayo the vol.
ume of sound swelling and jerking spasmodically with
every variation of force on the bellows, which Is always;
the case where the reeds open direct Into the bellows
or air passages, Instead of a wind chest or sound-box.
And yet some makers even go so far as to claim this
spasmodic or automatic jerking of the bellows on the
reeds as an excellence, just as though they did not
know that it must very soon throw the reeds out of
tune, and injure the bellows; and as though it were
not an easier matter to obtain a much better and mere
easily manage i swell by other methods. The truth
is, any organ, so called, or melodeon which has the
wind acting directly upon the reeds, is nothing more
nor less than a huge accordeon, dress it up as you may.
And whop organists and true musicians become aware
of the fact that they can obtain those that's... 3 organs
in fact 00 well as in name, they will buy no more of the
objectionable ones. Then again the swell should al
ways lie separate and distinct from the bellows, so as
not to be acted on by the hand, or sofeblowing, but
convenient so that the player can use It with the knee,
separate from the hands or feet, and than always un
der easy control to be used ad libitum.
The large divided bellows, or double bellows, Is also
a very important improvement. By this means not
only can the wind be supplied more evenly. but with
far greater ease to the performer, front the fart that
either bellows 10(410 will he sufficient for the lighter
melodies. thus pet milting the player to change about
and reel the feet at wilt ; then, it the bellows Is of
the requisite large Si?, and having the wind chest or
reservoir, all will be well. As to the reeds. they must
he scientifically tuned and voiced, or all the other good
qualities in the world cannot produce a good toned In.
strument. The inquiry now very naturally arises,
where can the organ be procured enolletiing all these
essential and desirable qualities? There ouly 0110
