'of one mind' in this 'matter, and that
they combined to extort thirty thousand
dollars from Mr. Tatlow Jackson 14 false
diad,:michievous representations ; and that
after a pretended officiousness around this
capital in aid of his, bill, to which bill no
one was opposed, they intended to divide
the money between them that they never,
intended to pay any part of it to any mem
ber of either branch of the Legislature—
that. they did so appropriate to themselves
five thousand. dollars, and that, but for
the exposure in the Senate and the ap
pointment„of this committee, the balance
of the money, to wit: twenty-five thousand
dollars would have been likewise retained
and divided among them.
Your committee would express their
regret that one of the principal witnesses
has declined to testify in the case, thus
rendering the testimony somewhat defec
tive, and placing himself in no enviable
attidude in relation to this matter. While
Mr. Tatlow Jackson, who employed this
witness as his attorney, has come forward
and, with a candor which does him credit
freely gives his testimony, this witness
has, as we think, very improperly, shel
tered himself under the pretext of profes
sional duty. It is for the Senate to say
how far he shall be protected by this ex
cuse.
In conclusion, your committee beg leave
to report that they have examined all the
witnesses in the ease that it was in their
power to reach, andto recommend that the
Speaker issue his warrant for Mr. Albert
R. Schofield, who has evaded the corn
,,ruittee by refusing to testify, and that ho
be brought beforo the bar of the Senate,
to answer such interrogatories, touching
the subject of this investigation, as may
be propounded to him.

READ WHAT DR. SCIIENCK IS DOING.
DR. .1. 11. SCIIENCK.
DEAR SIR feel it a duty I owo to you, and to all
who ere suffering under the diseases known LA Con
sumption and Liver Complaint, to let them know what
great benefits 1 have received from your Pulmonie
Syrup and Seaweed Tonic in so short a time. By the
',lensing of nod it has cured me thus far
Dr. Schenck, I will now make my statement to you,
as follows :—About eighteen mouths ago I was attack
ed with a severe couch, and it settled on my lungs ; I
could not retain anything I ate, and suffered with
evening fevers and night sweats. I was very much
red tired. The ee bites of toy eyes wore t ory yellow ;
likewise skit. ; ley appetite all gone, and unable
to digest what I did oat; bowels woolen, irregular and
costive. I teas very low spirited, and hind such violent
spells al coughingiwimu I laid down at eight and when
I arose in the morning that they would last ifee or
two hours.
I then ,would be nearly exhausted, and was entirely
unable to lie on my leit side. I cannot deneribe my
wretched sulfuring an I would wish to do. Every or
gan In any body was diseased or deranged. Such was
my situation at this time, and I was centime! to my
bed from the last of February, Ined, to June, I tie:;, not
able to sit up. I had the best of medical attend:lnm
the whole of the time. My cough was no very lord that
it racked me very mach. lat this time raised a large
quantity of thick, yellow, offewslve matter, sometimes
with blood, and it Was generally accompanied by nau
sea and a furred and thick coated tongue. At tile
time of coughing so badly I weld have shurp, shoot
ing pains in my left side and heart, night sweats, acid
soreness all through my whole chest; had much in•
ward lever, pain in my back and under my shoulder
bled, and in the mtall of may back, and at beaus Os se
vere that it would throw me io to spasms,. Now my
physician gave me up to die. Others I had, and the
bent of them, l•ut they could do nothing our me , rind
at that time I was nothing but skin and bones I then
on, in the western part of Missouri. In June last we
left thin e for the East, find in August last we eame to
Nc, York, and I was so reduced twit I could only
walk a little with my husband's help. After I had
been here a short time the salt water breeze made me
feel mucia better for a time end then I had again to
call a physician lee aid. We had four of tine-best phy •
sicians of Now - York on tho diseases of the lungs, and
doctors of all kinds, but of no avail. They said I was
past cure, and that cry Icicles were too far gone for any
one to cure me. But at this time 1 scaN on toy feet a•
bout the house. not able to do much of anything. In
November last I grow worse, and the consumption
diarrhea set in arid listed about eight weeks. We had
tried all arid everything that I could grasp at like a
.1:, ing person for my diseases—consumption and liver
complaint—hut of no avail.
In January.lBll3, I Wag brought down again on my
bed, and Was not expected to live the night lout. My
husband stayed at my side, sad other frieuds, and
they all give fee up to die. At this time every cunt
who saw mu did not think I would over leave my bed
' a living woman. The first eiyht I was attacked with
spasms, and cots deranged most el the time. A friend,
Mrs. Ilarris, came to sr e me the lust of the week, and
brought tho Sunday Mercury. Is It Was an uccouut or
a great cure performed by Dr. Schencic. She read it to
me, and it was so much like my disease that I asked
my husband to go and boo Mtn for mw. At this time
I had given up all hopes of ever getting well again,
and made my peace with Clod, to be ready whenever ho
Called for me.
On the 27th of January, HO, my husband called on
• Dr. Schenck, 32 Bond street, New York, and stated to
him my case, with in request for him to cull and Bee
me. which he did, and-exemined mu with the respir
. °meter. When he was about to go I asked him if ho
could cure me ? Ins reply was ; 1.1 cannot tell, both
lungs are diseased, and the bronchial tubes are affect
ed. on both sides." And yet he seemed to think there
wore:lungs enough left to effect a cure If the diarrhea
could ho stopped. Ile said mord. to do this, he would
have to give me Mandrake Pills in small doses at first,
to carry Off the morbid mutter, and then, with astrin
gente, he hoped to check it, which ho did, but the con
stant coughing, night sweats, and diarrhea had pros
trated me so-that he was afraid my vital powers were
too much prostrated ever to rally, and yet he seemed
to thipit if I could livo to, get enough PultJorde Syrup
through my system to cause expectoration there were
lunge onough left for me to,rocover. He wiahod mo to
try the Pulmonle Syrup and Seaweed Tonic at once,
saying it would do MO no harm, if it did me no good.
The Stet week it seemed to give mu strength, so that
on Sunday after I sat up In bed anti ate hearty for a
sick woman.; but the next week I lost till hope and
wished my husband not to give mu any more muds
glue. Brit the doctor had learned him of this, and
When the medicine was clearing out the system it
made them foal somewhat restless, and to persevere ;
and he insisted t n my taking it ; and now I fool the
benefit of it. For after eight days I began to gain my
strength, and, with the exception of a cold that put
me back some, I have been gaining strength of body,
my cough is going away, and all my pains are gone ;
no soreness of the body, my bowels aro, regular, and
my, breath is sweet, and I thank God that I am now
going about, andeew and read as well as ever I could.
I have taken sixteen bottles of the medicine, eight of
each. I now have a good appetite and rest well at
night ; my cough does not trouble roe in, getting up or
lying down. I would ,bore say to the 'afflicted with
consumption or liver complaint, that Dr. Schenck Is no
humbhg. You,can rely on what he says. Delay ;
it Is dangerous to trifle with these'•disetufes. If you
would has cured, go at once ; and any ono wishing to

PIANO-FORTES
DRIGGS' NE W PATENT.
A RE the only Instruments constructed
on a truly scientific principle. They have great
or strength, and will roMaln longer in Tune thou ay
other Piano. The censtruotion Is simple and natural
all the extraneous lumber in the body of the
to dispensed with; the Sound boards are merely
two arched planks of thin ivoodi like the front and
back of a violin; the strings are attached to a strong
Iron frame, whichlmidparated and entirely indepeod
cot of the case, iiierreby dispensing with tho old hirp
form old; bringing, by substitutluf straight bridgss,
preserving at the same time the Over Strung Bassi of
which Mr. Driggs is the inventor. By these improve
ments we gain much more vibratory power, at the
same time preservi,,i itit purity and richnose of
tone.
They have received the highest testimonials from the
Press, and all the principal artists in the - country,
among which are :
Harry Sanderson,
Max Maretzek,
Theodore Eisileld,
Herman Wollenhaupt,
Francis H. Brown,
Wm. Henry Fry,'
Mr. SEOESNIUND TIIALBEItO, the great pianist,
says :—I have examined your , now Piano-fortes, and I
cordially approve of its diiym of construction. Its
principle, by which groat Loewe of vibratory power is
obtained, being - very simple„ - ; perfectly 0111089phi
cal. The tone is grand abdrloble; it has great capac-
ity for sustaining the sound or singing, and Its vol
ume of tone or power I have never hoard excelled in
depth, purity, and sympathetic sweetness.
Wm. HENRY FRY, late musical critic of the N. Y.
'ribuno says :--I have examined your newly invented
l'iano-Fortes. They merit all the praise given to thorn
by Messrs Thaiberg, Oottsehalk, Stikeitoseh, Mason
and others. As regards structure, they are original
and philosophical ; in purity, volume, and continuity
of tone; In vocal versimilitude, that crowning expel.
'once which enables the pianists to "sing" on the In
strument, your Pianos ever deserve tho highest rank
Your Invention, In my opinion, Is destined to work
a radical change In the manufacture of - Pianos through.
ont the world.
From the N. Y. Herald, Sept. s.—Upon a careful ox
amination of Drigg'a Plano-Forte, wo find the lesults
obtained are a very fine singing tone, great purity and
brilliancy Throughout the entire instrument, not often
bound in Pianos constructed upon the old plan.
The N. Y. Times, July 12, says:—Wo have now an
instrument without an equal. It can sing with a
smooth delicacy, perfectly unattainable on any other
Instrument; an ordinary player obtains with no'exer
tion, the fullness of a Grand Plano.Porto, and they
must speedily supersede the old Pyles.
GENTLEMEN :—llavlng thoroughly examined and
tested the Plano-Fortes invented and patented by Mr
11. Ih Iggs, I am of the opinion that tho tone result
reel his improvements, as exhibited In the In
ements under examination, in point of richness
pth and brilliancy, equals that of the best Brand
Piano.Nortes, and excels them In pure, musical inton-
ration and actual tone, power thus approximating
closer to what I consider perfection In the Instrument
than has yet been achieved by any, oleter system of
man n facture.

Gentlemen :—I have recently 1 eon laboring strider
the distressing effects of illaige.ti,oll, 11,01.11panied by
a prostration of the nervous system. Numerous rem

tested, but without relief.' Your Hootiand's Gurnmn
Bitters were recommended by persona who had tried
them, and whose favorable mention of these bitters
induced me to try thorn. I must confess that I had
an aversion .to latent Medicines Irons the "thousand
and oue" quack "Bitters," whose only aims seems to
be to palm off sweetened and drugged liquor upon the
community in a sly way, and the tendency of .which,
I fear, Is to make many a confirmed drunkard. Upon
learning that yours was really a medicinal prepara
tion I took it with happy effect. Its notion, not only
upon the atctnirUh: but upon the nervous system, was
prompt and gratifying. 1 feel that I have derived
great' groat and permanent benefit from the use of
