    THE ANDERSONVILLEJAILOR.
ANTECEDENTS OF ItinslßY 'WERTZ.
A correspondent of the New York Times,
writes from Louisville:
"Copt. Henry Ilrertz, Ini.e keeper of the
Anderson ville prison, whose trial at \Vasil
ington, as announced recently has been post
poned by the nuthuOties, passed through this
city a few weeks spice, on his way to the na
tional capital. An immortality of infamy
must ever attach to his etude, as belonging
to One of the chiel instriments of the tuba
man tortures and barbarities systenta'ically
inflicted tyon our noble ,iddiers whom the
late of War subjected to that accursed durance,
"This person was formerly a resident of
Louisville, and in the employ, f o urteen years
ago. of Dr. li. Caspari, a highly respectable
German homeopathist or this city. The
doctor at that time kept a water cure e,tali
lishmient at the corner of Guthrie and Second
streets. Wertz had charge of the haths,
and, -to some extent, of the hooks of the es
tablishment, being authorized to !flake Out
and collect bills that were due. Dr. Caspuri
represents him as a fawning, cringing," Uri
fth-lleep' sort of fellow, at this time, with a
sneaking boob, as if afraid to meet the scru
tiny of`' an honest face. He did not, however,
suspect him of further dishonesty, at first. -
Rut presently he found his accounts running
short. Moneys that should be received is
not.. The matter was carefully investigated.
and the result found to lie that Wertz had
for a considerable time collected bills, itp
propriating what he had received to hi- uteri
use, and making fal , e entries in the books,

The doctor titxed Wertz with the, fraudulent
act:. The man confessed, and Wilhollt, allt
punishment inflicted on him, he Was pelTlllll
