TURNIPS FOR STOCK.
Concerning the 'VaiueNif turnips for
stock, Augustus Matson cf Onondpga
County N. Y., says in the Cultivator:
A lean looking for a yoke of - oxer,,
once came where I was breaking up . a
stiff sod, so a very warm dcy ; ho was
• surprised to see how they walked along,
paying no attention, to the very oppres
'live heat. He wished to buy thew, but
thought we asked too much. He went
on, but:cattle back and took them. Ile
was diseippointed in them; they did not
stand tlic heat as well as he expected
The trouble was he , had nu turnips lot
thetn. When cattle become accustomed
to them, there is no food they seek with
such avidity. I feed some to my horses,
generally giving them some once a day.
They seem fund of them ; they prefer
nem to carrots. I winter my.stock hogs
mainly on them. For hogs I cut them
finer than for cattle ; I have tried cook
ing diem for hogs, but like feeding then
.raw better. if hogs have as warm a place
as they ought to have, they will gtow
finely, fed almost entirely on turnips
If farmers would feed rutabagas to theit
hogs, there would be less complaint about
losing their pigs than there now is. 11
hogs had nct been used to eating them,
I would give them b•tt a few at a time at
first. When they have learned to eat ti
them, they relish a few of them occasion
ally until they are fully fattened. Calves
fed a few turnips each day, will do better
than if fed with meal. If fed enough
of meal they might get fatter, but with
the turnips they will keep in good order,
and grow faster. sto feeding sheep
with them, fcannot speak from experi
ence, but see no reason why they should
not he valuable.
PEACH POT-PIE
"What's that, you innovator ?
pot-pie .9"
Yes, ma'ary—that's exactly what I
do mean—a peach pot-pie. Nothing ri
diculous about that, certainly. I don't
know that it is even new to the public.
It Las not been to me any time these foul
years. I learned it of a Savoyard ch.);
and I consider it one of the choicest bits
oekitchen science I ever fell heir to.—
litease bear it in mind till peach time—
experiment, and become converted.
Take nice, tender, lean veal, clear of
bone, cut it into shreds, then good, fine
flavored peaches—not so ripe as to. le
stumpy—peal thin and slice as thin as
possible. Have greased as many t f
sinallest size soup plates as you will ha%
plates laid at the dinner table. Ott each
of these plates lay a crust. rolled out t.
quarter of an inch thick. and lay in a,
inch in depth veal, peaches and thinl,
sliced potatoes in equal proportions
Add as - much hatter will flavOr
dish, but not so notch :IS (0 make it greas‘
do. , itio - ft of pepper, a pinch of cinna
won, and then cover with a crust some
thing thinner than the bottom one.
Thus till all the platys, then set th,
first one in the bottom of a steamer o
tin Ici itle, cover it with an inverted plate
th II set in another and another, until al
are stacked in. If the steamer is ta,ed

a half. If a kettle is used. Tilite.! it, in
pot or iron lc( ttle. with water enough I.
come half way up the inner kettle ant,
boil as before, an hour and a half. Sere
the dishes ju,t, as they come from tht
kettle, on other plates.— Stthirdui/ Erh,

HOW TO RAISE AN APPLE OR
CHARD
Ist. Select your Imes yourself if possi
ble : don't allow a refuse tree to be set—
it is only wasting time and care ; deter
mine that every mean scrub of a tree go
to the bonfire before it finds a place ii
yourorchard, See that the trees are care
fully taken up and carefully set in well
prepared ground.
2d. Let your land be carefully cultivat•
ed for at least six years. Allow no grain,
except occasionally, perhaps, a crop or
buckwheat, but never a crop of rye Tht
contrast between a cultivated orchard and
a neglected one is astonishing, and the
two only need to be seen to be appreciat.
ed.
3d. Protect your trees from cattle,
sheep, mice and all destructive insects;
otherwise your labor may be all lost Ex
elude all domestic animals Allow no
mulching to remain around the trees in
winter to harbor mice, and especially
watch for the apple borer, oue of the most
insidious onen'ies of the apple tree. A
gallon of soft'soap diluted with one or two
gallons of softweter, applied to the trunks
of the trees, is an excellent thing for the
trees, and is not agreeable to any insect.
Nothing will kill an insect quicker than
soft soap.
-4th. Follow up a judicious system of
'pruning, leaving a good spreading, open
liead. By pruning annually, there will
be no necessity of sawing off large branch
es, and the result will bo more perfect
trees. Let the motto be followed—"what.
ever is worth doing. is worth doing well. t-•
FARMERS' SONS
The sons of farmers ' commonly think
their lot a hard ono.—Unlike most city
youths, they are compelled to perform
daily toil. Their life is not one of con
stant andseinent., They cannot see and
hear so much as their ci y cousins.. They
do not dress in as fine clothes—cannot '
treat and he treated at the popular saloons,
or visit the costly gambling resorts which
abound': in °rely city. 'They feel that_
their lot is •indead a hard, one, and' the
highest ambition of many of them is, to
arrive at that age when they.can go to
the city and.see "all the sights" that are
to be seen. .
But let us talk to our farmers'
Ycu are in the right place. You are
learning habits of industry and .fragal.ty.
- By your daily , toil you are acquiring a
sound constitntion—a most important
matter. And this is one of the reasons
that our great men have all come frcm
farmer's sons. They have grown up ro
bust with constitutions that could endure
a great amount of mental labor, which
youths from the city, with weak and fee
ble frames, could not stand.
If you cur] not sec as much as city youths.,
neither aro you exposed to the vices and
temptations of city life. You are then on
the right track—go ahead• Resolve to
form no bad habits. Indulge in no intox
leafing drinks. • If yotfforni a love for
them, it is almost impossible to subdue it.
Do not acquire the habit of chewing or
smoking tobacco, or taking snuff. Read
aoori books; let no opportunity for im•
provement pass away neglected, and you
will grow useful, intelligent men.—Rural

is componialed front the most etre-mind anti
dotes that medical science has discovered for
this afflicting distemper. and for the cure of the
disorders it entails. That it is far superior to
any other remedy yet devised. is known by all
who have given it a trial. That it does com
bine virtues truly extraordinary in their effect
upon this class of complaints, is indispiitab.y
proven by the great multitude of publicly
known and remarkable cures it has made of
the following diseases : King's Evil or
Glandular Swellings, Tumors, Erup
tions, Pimples, Blotches and Sores, Ery
sipelas. Bose or St. Anthony's Fire, Salt
Rheum, Scald Hesd, Coughs from tu

Swellings, Debility, Dropsy, Neuralgia,
Dyspepth or Indigestion, Syphilis and
Syphilitic Infections, Mercurial Diseases,
Female Weaknesses, and, indeed, the whole
series of complaints that arise from impurity
of the blood. Minute reports of individual
eases may be found in AYER'a AMERICAN
ALMANAC, which is furnished to the druggists
for gratuitous distribution. wherein may be
learned the directions for its use, and some of
the remarkable cures whi• h it has made when
all other remedies had failed to afford relief.
Those cases are purposely taken from all sec
tions of the country, in order that every render
V have access to some one who can speak to
Mil. of its benefits from personal experience.
Scrofula depresses the vital energies and thus
leaves its victims far more subject to disease
and its falai results than are healthy vonstitu
ilence it tends to shorten, and does
greatl; shorten, the nventge duration of-human
life Vile vast impornmee of these considera
tions has led us to spend years in perfecting a
mutely which i< nd quote to its cure. This
we now offer to the public under the name of
A SARSAPARILLA, although fr is COM•

os ~j4 l y ou may protect yourself front the suffer

the foni corruption: that rot and fester in the
b ood ; purge out the causes of disease, and
veld, oils health will follow. By its peculiar
blocs this remedy stimulates the vital fune
duns, and thus espels the distempers which
lurk within the system or burst out on any
1,1111 of it.
ITe know the public have been deceived by
many compoends of Strsoparilla, that promised
inuel, and did nothing; but they will neither be
de,% , 1 ed nor disappointed in this. Its virtues
have been proven by abundant trial, and there
remains no question of its alt passing excellence
for the cure of the afflicting diseases it is in
tended to reach. Although tinder the 'same
name, it is it very different medicine from any
other which has lieen before the people, and is
far 1110113 effectual than any other which has
ever been available to them.
