Itss_ Probably the farmers of Cumber
land county never in their-history had prom
ise of Set abundant harvests as at the present
time. The hay and wheat under the influ
once of the copious rains of last Spring have
grown into rankness. and Ate in a fair way
to ripen an abundance of the staff of life.—
Our abundance will make up for the fall in
prices and bring as much money to Cumber
land„eounty as when war prices filled our
farmer's pockets. We ought,to be grateful
to the Giver of all good that $e has seen fit
to give us abundance whereivith,to make up
the'losses and devastations of ?,War. We
hope our brave veterans, will contradict thy
predictions of their enemies, that thek war
has rendered, them worthless, and will all
show by going - to work to help gather these
crops that they are as valuable, as industri
ous and enterprising citizens, aOhey have
shown thenisolves,unsurpassed as'hrave and
efficient soldiers. And wo knqw:they will,
and all our people will yet he convinced that
there is no education which will give us such
patriotic, industrious, quiet, and ;peaceable
citizens, as the stern discipline of righteous

,WHEN TO CUT WHEAT.— -The wheat
harvest is close at hand, there is a right
Wily in which every thing should be clone,
and a slight neglect may sometimes
occasion groat loss ; it is important that all
farmers communicate their experience for
the good of the agricultural fraternity. To
this end a correspondent of the Germantown
(Pa.) "Telegrap': communicates the re9ult
of his experiment last season in cutting wheat
at different stages of ripeness.
The exilerimentAl cutting WIli• commenced
on the Irith ix.lunf., and from that to the I-i
of July, two good glionvvs were rut near
SIX o'clock ; from the I , t to the 211th of .1111 y
three idnatvt , were cut every ururning.
These sheave: were cut with tl sickle, and
a metal label containing the date, was tied
to the hand of each sheaf: every morning
they were carried from the held to the barn,
and laid on a mow over the barn floor. Each
set of sheaves remained in al - o'll6lone day,
and were then housed ; if wet, care was taken
to dry them well.
un the Ist of August the sheaves were tak
en and threshed, by striking the heads
over the edge of a board laid on an open bar
rel, and each lot carefully by itself. with its
proper label. As soon a , all the lot , were
threshed and arranged, the follov.ing was
the result. Equal measures of were
taken. One measure of that cut on :

I send you a Plot of the proposed Cemetery at
Carlisle, Pa. l trust it wilbanswer the purpose. The
spot you have selected, is I think, the most suitable
for the purpose that con bo found in the vicinity of
your town. Upon examining tbii " localities in the
neighborhood of Carlisle, I find but few places Imita
ble for n Cemetery, owing to the rocks being eo near
the Surface. Your ground, as far us I could ascertain,
Is free from this very objectionable feature.
Its flaunt as to Town, renders Its desirable spot for
the purpose - you Intend it, no It grontly lessens the ex
p••nse of Interment. and gives all'elasses an opportuni•
ty to have the graves of those dearest to them under
their own care and Inspecithla.
'I understand, also that we' or front your water works
ran be easily ol,talued to keep the ground moist and
the Plants vigorous. You havo the location for a'Cem•
etery that may be made an ornament, to your town.
Yours,
To the Late Patrons of the Carlisle
American.
