and gives weiglit to the grain - and there
the greatest quantity of gluten in the grain
just when the straw is yellow two or three
joints from the ground, the head turns down

your fingers without getting any milk from

THE COMING FouRTH JULY—In
various localities effiets are already being
inaugurated for making extensive prepara
tions for a grand celybration of the anniver
sary of the Deelaration of our National In
dependence. It is suggested in some places
to make this day the occasion of it celebration
of Peace. No day has yet been designated
for that purpose, nor has the President offi
cially declared a peace. The few miserable
remnants of the rebel hordes who are hiding
and skulking in the mountains, or prowling
in hidden inlets of the ocean, will 80011 be
smoked out of their hiding pieces, when the
nominal peace we are now enjoying will be
confirmed by an official edict of the Presi
dent. There is some reasonable assurance for
indulging in the belief that the corn i ug Fourth
will be the eventual day fixed upon by Pre
sident JonssoN. It will then be doubly
venerated as a holiday, for the two most mo
mentous events that ever rose in the history
of our free Republic.
In view of the importance attached to the
comink . Fourth of July, our citizens should
forthwith make some active preparations for
the celebration of the day. We owe it to Our
returned soldiers to give them an appropriate
welcome home," and no more fitting day
could be selected. These men have risked
life and limb in our defence and in the de
-fence of the •Un.on, and certainly a glorious
reception should be given them. Now is the
time to consider the matter maturely, and
itevisn miile preparations. -
CEMETERY —We are glad to learn
that the great want of the town, a suitable
place for interment, is likely to be supplied.
Our present grave-yard is already filled to
such an extent, that wo are informed, it is
difficult to dig a new grave without disturb
ing-11;o refnains of those who beim, in the
course of time, boon placed there. This, if
true, seems sad, and shows that a now loca
tion is required. We aro pleased, therefore,
to know that now ground has been selected
for a Cemetery, and that the location pro
mises to be what the public are in need of.
The lot selected- is the beautiful piece of
ground on the 'eastern side of the borough,
now ()mined by Wee. M. P . EyttosE, Esq. ;A
competontengineer has examined -the place
and pronounced in its-favor,-above-every
other site in" the. vicinity. His report and
plot will be ready for the public in a few
days, The design is to make . the cost of in
torment low enough to justify almost any
one in buying a lot. Mr. A. B. Eviprer, of
Carlisle, whose energy end.,, enterprise nro
