arrested. ALEX. CLELAN, Co. "F"' 18th
Petinc - Cavalry, reported under President's,
Proclaination.
On Tuesday morning the 26th inst., amen
giving the name of JOEIN SMITH, was brought
into the office under charge, of Detective E.
P. ZINN. This was the individual who on
the night previous created such an alarm by
his represented nearness of resemblance to
the assassin J. WILKES Boone. The coun
try near the residence of Mr. D. RING WALT
was thronged with people, all evincing a de
cided disposition to Assist in the capture of
said BOOTH." But the latter, or rather
his prototype, eluded the vigilance of his
pursuers and made his escape to the neigh
borhood of Mechanicsburg, where he was ar
rested by Detective ZINN, who had been
previously advised. '
The prisoner is a spare-built man with
keen black eyes, black hair and Moustache,
and a countenance ut once indicating rascal
ity, and a perfect willingness to conimit if
backed by a sufficient inducement, any black
deed. His statement is the most contradic
tory and unsatisfactory we have ever heard
a prisoner eutmciate, being a tissue of false
hoods from begining to end. He represent
ed his home 'as being at Brooklyn, N. Y.,
and his business as that of a peddler. Ho
came direct from Hagerstown, Md.
This “Jourr SMITH (which cognomen by
the way is entirely assumed,) was forwarded
to HarriabUrg and immediately taken charge
of.by the milithry authorities at'that post.—
He has since been strongly guarded to the
office of Col. BAKER, Chief of Government
Detectives, Washington'D. C.
FAIR OF THE EMPIRE HOOK & LAD
DER CO. .i'Ve are pleased to learn that this
very useful and efficient company, is to
hold a Fair for one week in Rheem's
commencing on the 13th of May. There is
no Company, connected with the Fire De
partment of the borough, that has higher
claims on the patronage of the citizens, than
the Empire Hook d• Ladder Co. In every
emergency, where their services were re
quired, they have been promptly on the
ground, with their apparatus, of the efficient
use of which they have rendered good ser
vice in saving property, and extinguishing
fires.
A new feature is to be introduced at this
fair, which will, no doubt, create a consider
able degree of interest. The company have
purchased an elegant Silver Fire liorn in
Philadelphia, at a cost of about one hundred
dollars which is to be conte-ted fur, by the
Union, Cumberland and Good Wit/ Compa
nies. A sufficient number of tickets have
been prepared, on which are printed the
names of the several companies, will be sold
to the and adherents of these CM,-
panics, and during the Fair, they will be de
posited in a box properly secured ; at the
conclusion of the Fair, the box will be open
ed in the presence of a Committee of each
Company, and that one which has purchased
the largest number of tickets will take a
/torn.
As the proceeds of this Fair are to ho ap
plied Co the purchase of a lot and the erec
tion of &Truck House, it is to be hoped that
an object so piaiseworthy will be liberally
encouraged by the public. -
im.The following notice of the de
ceased, who was buried in our graveyard last
week, with appropriate military honors,
was handed us by a friend of the family of the
dead veteran.
CHARLES A. HOLTZMEIN WIIS burn in
Alexandria, Va., February 21st 1864, and
died April 16th 1865. Ile was the first man
enlisted from Shippenshurg. At the end of
the first three months he immediately en
listed for three years. Ile loved his Coun
try and said he would rather die in battle
defending the flag of his Country than to die,
at home.
The tumult of war shall wake him no more,
Be is deaf to the cannon's loud rattle,
Emblazoned his name on the banner of fame
For the hero has fought his last battle.
For the Union ho fought fi r the Union ho died
With the foe of hie Country before him,
Let the nation remember lila valor with pride,
And the Star Spangled Banner wave o'er him.
*Erb The Atlantic Monthly for May is al
ready issued. James Russell Lowell contrib
utes a dream-phantasy, styled "Gold Egg ;''
John G. Whittier, 'The G rave by the Lake;"
Gottschalk No. 3of his "Notes of a Pianist:"
0. W. Holmes, "Our Battle-Laureate ;"
Mrs. Stowe, "The Chimney Corner," T. B.
Aldrich, "Castles," and less known writers
pieces of varying merit. "Diplomacy of the
Revolution" furnishes a theme for Prof.
Greene too rich in material to be exhausted
in a single number, or even in a volume.
"Out of the Sea" is a sketch beginning on
the lee coast of New Jersey, and introducing
a quiet Quaker girl of Philadelphia, who had
taught the freedmen at Port Royal, and gone
to Gettysburg and Antietam with sanitary
stores. It is a dramatic romance by the au
thbrof "Life in the Iron Mills," one of the best
papers . that has appeared in the Atlantic.
Our Foitag Folks for May has all of its arti
cles illustrated, .. Edmund Kirk, Mrs. Stowe,
Gail Hamilton, Mayne Reid and Carleton
are among the contributors. "Farming for
Boys," "Afloat in the Forest," and two or
three other articles, are of a practical tenden
cy, and will not only waken interest. bill
also convey a large amount of useful informa
tion. As we have said before, it is one of
the beat Serials for young folks that has over
bee4publis44 in talie country.

Browning's Excelsior Coffee
Whilst 'rying Coffee of all the various' brands.
Remember "Browning's Exceisim"—at the head it
stands.
True, it's not like others that are "Sold Everywhere."
A little stretch, we all •ro know, good geode wile easily
bear,
(But a stretch like this—"sold everywhere"—is very
apt to tear )
Now, I can safely my, w thont any hesitation.
There's none like " Browning's Excelsior" In this en
lightened nation.
Skilled chemists' have not found a Coffee from any store
PosseSsing the same Ingredients as Browning's Ex.
colsior."
or VI there any one, In or out of the Coffee trade,
Who knows the articles trom which "Browning's Ex
colsim's" made.
I'm told it's made from barley, r; a, wheat, beans, and
peas;
Name a thousand other things—but the Right One if
you please.
But with the Coffee men I will not hold contention
For the many, many things they say—too numerous to
mention.
Whilst they're engaged In runninground from store to
store
To learn the current wholesale price of "Browning's
Excelsior,"
-ome who know my Coffee gives perfect satisfaction,
