OF THE ARMY OF TILE POTOMAc, 1 Wednesday, Feb. 8-8 p. in. f Nothing of interest has transpired on the lines to-day, although the weather has been mare favorable than for ,i , VPI'JLI days past.. . . -The troops are busy building works along the newly established line, which will take Berne days to complete, when they will (tem rtorice erecting new gouurt , rs for them ,ol " B . This will not ben ditlieult job, as there is plenty of timber in the neighbor- . hood, and the liken have got so used to the work that regular carpenters at the North would be astonished to witness the rapidity with which whole rows of houses are run up, soma of which arc models of architectural beauty. N Feb. 17, 1865-2tx- FIRE.----Shordy before twelve o'clock on Tuesday night our citizens were aroused by the cry of tire. It was soon acertained that the large building at Carlisle Barrack , used as a store house fir the commissary department of the regular host was in flames. Our fireman were on the ground with com mendable promptitude, c o nsidering the dis tance to be traversed and the extreme cold ness of the night. All efforts to save the building were thwhrted by Jack Frost, who had hermetically sealed the water pipes. The building was entirely consumed but most if not all the contents..saved. One room has been for sonic time occupied as a carpen ter shop, and it was here that the tiro origi nated, whether by accident or design has not transpired. ,05Y-We have received a number of inquiries as to tho purport of the figures which are to be seen opposite the names of our mail subscribers on the little labels which are pasted on our paper each week. These figures indicate the time up to which the subscriber has paid for his paper--for exam ple 27th Apr.6s. means that en the 27th of April 1865, the time for which such person has paid will have expired, and another years subscription will be due. These labels are attached to the paper each week by an inge nious machine, invented by the Rev. Robt. Dicli,of Buffalo N. Y. The machine is it cu riosity. If our friends will call on any pub lication day, we shall be glad to exhibit it in successful operation. HANDED OTJTRAGE.- -, On Fri day wig ning last, an acting Corporal named Peter. Brown from the Carlisle Barracks with two guards came to'towirto hunt up soldiers who had loft the Barracks without proper authority. The Corporal went in to the restaurant kept by Robert Bell, and whilst in the act of going out the bar -tender said something to his dog which had growled at theformer, and which caused him to re turn, and'esk if the remark had been made to him. Receiving a reply in the negative the Corporal again started out, but the dog guowling, a second time, was admonished to 4i shut up" Whereupon' the Corporal who was l'apiling for a fight" rushed back into the restaurant and without any prefratory remark commenced cutting and slashing with his sabre at the inmates—who only by their dexterity evaded the Cuts and saved them selves from serious damage. Not satisfied With his prodigious display of sWorfl else the pseudo Corloral .backed: by hi* armed gtiard arrested Mr. Charles Spotts , wood who was i s the restaurant at the time, and who had 4-taken any part whateVer • in' the proceedings, and actually marched him to ,j.it; orderiN the Sheriff-to commit him 'until "further orders"; Sheriff Jacobs not coinpl,y - ling Nyith the mandato of ttKrgal lent Vorporal the latt9r marched his ,prison er, closely g,uarded.front and rear, in thedc rection of the Barracks, but before arriving there, relented somewhat of his rather dan gerous conduct, and returned to jail, where he again-ordered the Sheriff to take" Sir. H. into custody but with the same result. Ire then released the prisoner and returned - with his guard to the Barracks. Information was made the next day by Mr. lienry Crouse the bar-tender, and the Party were arrested, the guard being hailed, and the Corporal lodged in jail until next term of Court. Thk outrage committed on a resr ectable citizen without the slightest provocation, soldiers armed with carbines and sabres, rendering resistance entirely futile, is unpar alleled for atrocity in the annals of our town. Our citizens are liable every night to insult and imposition by these armed bravadoes, and it is high time some determined action were taken to secure themselves from the in sults lint( outrages of the regular soldiers at Carlisle Barracks.
