Youi letter dated the 13th, stating that
you had expressed a barrel to my address,
containing Kraut for the returned prisoners,
was received to-day. The barrel has not
yet been received, but will doubtless appear
in due time. I write before its receipt to
acknowledge the kindness and liberality of
the Society you represent, because just, now
I have a few moments Ici,ure; a relief I may
not have again until after New Year's. I
thank the good ladies of the "Mite Society"
of Carlisle, in behalf of these suffering, no
ble mon, so long in bondage, and so long
tortured and starved and inhumanly treat
ed by the boasting chivalry of the South,
for their donations. May God reward them
an hundred fold. Had I time I might write
you many interesting particulars about those
received at this hospital.. About 8,010 have
already arrived. More are expected daily.
The hospitals are all full. But we must
make provision as far as we can, for all that
may yet come. Death is making fearful hav

ment. They soon strik_after- getting-home,

Such a sight us this load presented tongue or

I have tried as these several steamers have
arrived, - to keep down any desires for re
venge that might arise in the breast, as I
passed among the men and viewed their con
dition -all the efforts of the inhuman treat
ment of their captors ; but to' day as I
looked at the hundreds on this vessel, re
duced to skeletons, groaning, whining like
children, the mind almost gone, with some
near the verges of the grave, it was more than
human nature could stand. While the boat
was unloading we confess we lost sight of and
entirely forgot. the good words of Scripture
—"Vengeance i 4 mine—l will repay saith
the Lord." Over three hundred had to be
taken up in the arms and curried off. As
one poor man said who had been a prisoner
for over a year ''Satan is certainly doing a
rushing business in the South—the way they
treat Yankee prisoners' lies gut them all en
listedasshis tigents." And indeed it would
seem to be the truth. If they possessed
spark of honorable feeling could they be so
brutal to men captured on the battle field ;
The condition of all these returned soldiers
is the st rangest evidence that their end draw
etli nigh. A rightous God cannot let
such a people exercise authority long IL;
will sweep them from the face of the earth
with the -11,5)111 of destruction." And who
that has gone over these vessels a- they ar
