"!:91#1i cillUß ER ." One of the most ont-apoken of Metho dist ministers vras:"Old Gruber:" He was assisted wOrship, where a young Presbyterian clergymen preached violent ly against some of the'dootrines of Meth odjun.r/Propher 'Gruber was, asked: to cicse serviiies‘ with prayer, 'which ho did, and as is customary, prayed for the minister. Lord' said ho, 'bless the preabllty ,:who had preaohed to Vs this morning, andmake his heart as soft as his' heed is, and then he'll do some good.' The above from the Sierra . : Democrat, brings to mind- a dozen stories about that good 01(1'6:made man. We remember him from our earliest boyhood; . every dog and eat, and every, • tobacco:chewer and over-dressed lady 'has-had reason to re member 'Father Gruber,' and woe to to the ,upfortunate youngster whom he un dertook to reprove. Arriving at the house of ohe of the brethren, his first business,, was to drive oat the dogs and oats, and then.see that his horse was taken care of. Once, at a camp-meeting, a rather flashily dressed lady . entered the altar-gate while the:nid 'man :was preaching, and walked back and forth, seemingly afraid to sit on the rude benches, for fear of spoiling her finery. 'She had an ostrich feather in her head dress, •whieb was a sore abomination in the old thati!ts eyes, and stopking in the midst of 'a pathetic passage, he exelaimed. "Brethren, open the gate, and bit that goose out 1." Poor old Father Gruber ! He once laid a grape - vide over our shoulders, with no very gentle hand, for smoking in the aisle, at camp-meeting. The good old soul didn,t know that we had "dismissed from divine service," and were waiting on a bright-fellow-worshipper whom we had left there on the anxious bench ! Sierra Citizen,. WAa HousEs.—General Washington had two favorite horses; one, a large ele gant parade horse of a chesnut color, high spirited and 'of a gallant carriage; this httd belonged to the British army; the other was smaller, and his color sorrel. This heAmi always to ride in time of fiction ; so:that, whenever the General, mounted him, the word ran through the ranks.— "We have business on hand." At the battle of Germantown, General Wayne road his gallantroan, and in ()barg ing the enemy, his horse received a wound in the bead, and fell, as was supposed dead. Two days after, the roan returned to the American camp, not materially injured and Was again - fit for service. During the battle of Waterloo, some of the horses, as they lay on the ground. hav ing recovered frod the first agony of their Wounds, fell to eating the grass about them, thus surrounding themselves with a circle of bare ground, the limited extent of - which showed their weakness; others of thesointerestinganimals were observed quietly grazing in the middle of the field, betweQn the two hostile lines, their riders having been shot off their backs; and the balls that flew over their heads and the roaring behind arid before, caused no res pite of the usual instinct of their nature• When a charge of cavalry wont past near to any of these stray horses, the trained animals would set off, form themselves in the rear of their mounted companions, and though without ridera,:gallop strenu ously along with the rest, not stopping or flinching when the fatal.shock with the enemy took place. AN ENTERPRISINO AGENT.—An en intraug travcrtiug agent ror a Woft -known Cleveland tomb-stone manufactory, recently made a visit to a small town in a neighboring county. Roaring in the village that a man in the remote part of the township had list his wife, ho thought he would go and see him, and offer him consolation and a gravestone, on his usual reasonable good terms. He started; the road was a horribly frightful one, perse vered, and arrived at the bereaved man's house. Bereaved man's hired girl told the agentthat the bereaved man was split ting rails, " over on the pastur, " about two miles. The indefatigable agent mounted his horse and started for the "pastur." - After-falling into all manner of mnd-holes, scratching himself with the briers, and tumbling over decayed logs, the agent at last found thebereaved man. In asubdued voice he asked the man if he had lost his wife. The man said be had.— The agent was very sorry to hear it, and sympathized very deeply with the man in his-sorrow; but death he said, was an in satiate archer, and shot down all, of both high and low degree. He informed the man that " what was his loss was her gain ? " and would be glad to sell him a gravestone to mark the spot where the loved one slept—marble or common stone, as he chose, at prices defying, competi tion. The bereaved man said there was a slight diffi.oulty:in this way. "Haven't you lost your wife:?" inquired the agent. "Why, yes,—l have," said the man, "put a gravestone ain't necessary; for you see the ouced eriittar ain't dead—she scoot. edwith another man !" The scrofulous contamination is variously caused by mercurial disease, low living, disordered digestion from unhealthy food, impure air, filth nail filthy habits, the depressing vices, and, above all, by the venereal infection. Whatever be its origin, it is hereditary in the constitution, descending "from parents to children unto the third and fourth generation ;" indeed, it seems to be the rod of Him who says, " I will visit the iniqui ties of the fathers upon their children." The diseases which it originates take various names, according to the organs it attacks. In the lungs, Scrofula produces tubercles, and finally Consumption ; in the glands, swellings which suppurate and become ulcerous sores ; in the stomach and bowels, derangements which pro duce indigestion, dyspepsia, and liver com plaints; on the skin, eruptive and cutaneons affections. These all having the same origin, require the same remedy, viz. purification and invigoration of the blood. Purify the blood, and these dangerous distempers leave you. With feeble, foul, or corrupted blood, you can not have health ; with that " life of the flesh " Healthy, von cannot have scrofulous disease. is compounded from the most effectual .anti dotes that medical science has discovered for this afflicting distemper, and for the cure of the disorders it entails. That it is far superior to any other remedy yet devised, is known by all who have given it a trial. That it does com bine virtues truly extraordinary in their , effect upon this class of complaints, is indispdtably proven by the great multitude of publicly known and remarkable cures it has made of the following diseases : King's Evil or Glandular Swellings, Tumors, Erup tions, Pimples, Blotches and Sores, Ery-' sipelas, Rose or St. Anthony's Fire, Salt Rheum, Scald Head, Coughs from tu berculous deposits in the lungs, White Swellings, Debility, Dropsy, Neuralgia, Dyspepsia or Indigestion, Syphilis and Syphilitic, Infections, Mercurial Diseases, Female Weaknesses, and, indeed, the whole series of complaints that urine from impurity of" the blood. Minute reports of individual eases may be found in AYER ' S AMERICAN ALMANAC, which is furnished to the druggists for gratuitous distribution, wherein may be learned the directions for its use, and some of the remarkable cures which it has made when all other remedies had failed to afford relief. Those cases are purposely taken from all sec tions of the country, in order that every reader may have access to some one who can speak to him of its benefits from personal experience. Scrofula depresses - the vital energies, and thus leaveS its victims far more subject to disease and its fatal resplts than are healthy constitu tions. Hence it tends to shorten, and does greatly shorten, the average duration of human mils has led us - to spend years in perfecting a remedy whiOtis adequate to its care. This we now offer to the public under the name of AvErt's SAusArAnictt, although it is com posed of ingredients, some of which exceed the best of Sarsaparilla in alterative power. By its aid you may protect yourself from the suffer ing and danger of these disorders. Purge out the foul corruptions that rot and fester in the blood ; purge. out the causes of disease, and vigorous health will follow. By its peculiar virtues this remedy stimulates the vital func tions, and thus expels the distempers which lurk within the system or burst out on any part of it. We know the public have been deceived by many compounds Vf Sarsaparilla, that promised much and did nothing; but they will neither be deceived nor diSappointed in this. Its virtues have been proven by abundant trial, and there remains no question of its surpassing excellence for the cure of the afflicting diseases it is in tended to reach. Although under the same name, it is a Very different medicine from any other which has been before the people, and is far more effectual than any other which has ever been available to them. NEW 000Ds ! I CHERRY PECTORAL, The World's Great Remedy for Coughs, Colds, Incipient Con sumption, and for the relief of Consumptive patients in advanced stages , of the disease. This has been so long used and so univer sally known, that we — need do no more than assure the public that its quality is kept up to the best it ever has been, and that it may be relied on to do all it has ever done.
