.:as---Oolonels Jones and Warren in the
search for the arguments by which the 0. S.
L. convent men to the doctrines of peace.
On last Stituaday afternoon, Governor
Morton received a letter from an eastern
city, which was as follows, except some
memos which we omit for prudentialreasons.
August 17, 1864.
Governor 0. P. Morton—
Sir: The facts stated have come to my
knowledge in a manner and from a source
such as to leave no doubt in my mind, of
their reliability.
The copperheads of Indiana have ordered
and paid for 30,000 revolvers, with 42 boxes
fixed ammunition, to be distributed amongst
the antagonists of our Government, for the
pnu•poso of controlling the Presidential elec
tion. •
August 5, the steamer Granite Slate land
ed in New York, 42 boxes of revolvers and
miummition ; August 5, the steamer City of
Hartford landed 22 boxes ammunition, des
tined for Indianapolis. Thirty-two boxes of
the above have been forwarded to J. J. Par
solis,lndirinfti)olU, via Merchants' Dispatch,
and marked ; the balance is stored at
street, New York, awaiting the
convenience of the copperheads to pay for
the same before shipping.
Immediately on the receipt of this letter,
Governor Morton pinged the information it,
contained in'the hands of Policeman John
A Russell, who was able in a short time to
report progress to Cat James G. Jones, As
sistant Provost Marshal, who, with Colonel
Warner, of the Veteran Reserve Corps, with
a proper detail, made descent on the print
ing and book-building establishment of H.
H. Dodd t% Co., on Saturday night, where
they found thirty-two boxes such as were de
stribed in the letter. After the boxes were
opened, their contents were found to consiA
of 400 large navy revolvers and. 133,0 at
rounds of fixed ammunition for the C:1211C
ESE
Among the captures made nt the same
place, were the Great' Seal of the Order of
the "Sons of Liberty," the official list of the
members of the order, at this plaer, and
several hundred printed copies of tho Pit Ind,
which has heretofore been published in the
Journal. Also a large amount of corre: , -
pondence of an important character, which
may bo given to the public at the proper
time. The people will begin to understand
now, how much these unmitigated scoundri.ls
desire peace. Thirty thousand navy revol
vers, with ammunition enough for an army,
coupled with the negotiations of Mr.Voor
boss for the purchase of 20,00 Q Garibaldi
rifles, would indicate that there is a good
deal of the disposition of the tiger hid under
their sheep skin garb of pence.
When we look at the large sum of money
which the amount of arms and ammunition
named in this letter must cost, the question
presents, itself of the ways add means. The
pistols alone would cost cluse on to one mil
lion of dollars at manufacturers' prices, and
the 20,000 rifles, without the import duties,
would cost $280,000. Of course no such
'sums are provided for by the xnembers of the
order in this State, but there have been some
Peace Commissioners prowling along the
Canada border for several weeks, and John
, C. Walker, tuutother peace men of Indiana,
have been visiting them. Some month ,
since the Confederale Governinent borrowed
$15,000,000 in Europe, for which it issued cot
ter bonds, and every blockade runner , car , -
ries out cotton to repay the loan.
The object of the loan was, primarily, to
purchase a navy in European ports, includ
ing the celebrated rams. That speculation
having failed by the refusal of the Govern
ments of England and France to permit the
to depart, and they having been sold to oth
er persons, the peace commissioners are in
funds, and they could not make an in ye:4-
ment more to the advantage of their muster
Than td purchase arms and ammunition for
Northern traitors, and to pay .iNdrthern dent
agogues liberally for shrieking fur peace, free
speech and liberty. Wm. H. Harrison, See
rotary of the eider of which IL 11. Dodd is
"Grand Commander," was arrested and is
still in custody. Messrs. John J. Parsons and
Chas. Hutchinson, partners of Dodd,
•
were also arrested, but were discharged on
their affidavits that thew were not members
of tho Order, and Were not advised of tho
contents of the boxes.
We have given a brief account of this the
most,
.startling event in the attempted drama
of civil war. The event naturally created
an intense excitement in our city, and it
will be an admonition to the people of the
state of the danger which surrounds them.
Dodd is, absent from the, city, probably

the arms and cartridges iii hand and expected,
but NAieh, to his surprise, will be devoted to

tion, and. upon it' We . prisoner must livo or
die. The meal is often tinsitled and spur,
and tlio meat; as such in theNOrth is 'consign-,
ed to the Soap maker. 'Such aro the rations
upon which Union soldiers are fed by the
rebel authorities, and by which they are
barely holding on to life. But to starvation
and exposure, to sun and storm, add the
sickness which prevails to an alarming extent.
On an average one hundred die daily, It is
impossible that any Unson soldier %hould
know all the facts pertaining to this terrible
mortality, as they are not paraded by the
rebel authorities. Such statements as the
following, made by
eloquent testimony. Said ho : ~O f twelve l of
us who were captured, six died ; four are in
the hospital, and I never expect to see them
again. There are but two of us left." In
1862, at Mongomery, Alabama, under far
more favorable circumstances, the prisoners
being protected by sheds, from ono hundred
and fifty to two hundred grew sick front
diarrhea and chills, out of seven hundred.
The saine per eentage would giveseven thou
sand sick at A vidersonville. It needs nu
continent, no efrorb4 at word-painting, to
make such a picture stand out boldly in
most !terrible colors.
Nor is this all. Among the ill-feted of
the many who have suffered amputation
in consequences of injuries received before
capture, sent from Bebcl hospitals before
their wounds were healed, there are eloquent
witnesses of the barbarities of which they
were victims. If to these facts is added this,
that nothing more demoralizes soldiers and
and developes the evil passions of man then
starvation, the terrible condition of the
Union prisoners at AndersonvillF s Call be
readily imagined. They are fast losing hope,
and beeiiining utterly reckless of life. Num
bers, era red by their sullbrings, wander
about in a style of idiocy ; others deliberate
ly cros Ohl dead line, and are remorsely

We respectfully ask The Daily ,Y,Ars, The
The The Aye, The

before their readers and tell us what they
