IMPORTANT AititEST:— . --On - Tuesday
morning last two assistant U. S. marshals
arrived in' Carlisle, and at once arrested Mr.
Isaac Livingston, clothing merchant, Mr.
Leeds, hie cutter, and a lad Askew, his sales
man.
The charge against these parties is that they
!Ave aided and abetted desertion from the
U. S. army, by selling newly enlisted volun
teers full suits of citizens clothing, knowing
they were to be used as disguises, and taking
from them the United States clothing worn
at the time of exchange. The evidence by
which these charges are expected to be sus
tained was collected by Col. Henderson,
Provost Marshal, and -forwarded to Phila
delphia, where a thorough examination will
be made.
That a large number of professional boon
tyjurnpers who were sent to Carlisle Barracs
escaped from the service through the eon-
Ttivance of parties in Carlisle, is certain i and
it is equally certain that the guilty persons,
if discovered, lwill receive the just reward of
their heat) , crime.
That a man who has for so long a time
enjoyed the enviable reputation o 1 Isaac
Livingston should be guilty of such an of
fence is hard to believe, and it will require
strong evidence to convince our citizens that
the act was done either with his knowledge
or consent. But at the same time every
- N. man who knows Col. Henderson, knows that
his zeal to bring wrong doer 3 to justice is
always tempered with that unbending sense
of justice which would preclude the possi
bility of his countenancing the arrest on any
alight suspicion.
We anxiously await the result of the in
vestigation.
