theta through these columns two year a ago, they, as well as our butchers, would now be better off. We advised, among other things, against the killing of their calves, and warned them that cattle would soon become scarce if they continued the wanton practice. Few. of them, however, heeded our advice, and,we are now reaping the fruits of their obstinacy and selfishness. Had theyraised their calves they would have been well re munerated for -their trouble, and the pros euf scarcity of cattle would not have taken Place. We hope the Legislature may pass a law making it a crime to kill a calf during the continuance of the war. Bht why Should everything be up in price 7 . "On account of the war," answers the seller. Fiddlesticks ! What has the war to do with . hens laying eggs, cows giving milk, or the raising of cabbage ? The fact that eggs, milk, cabbage, and a hundred other articles consumed by housekeepers are not used in the army, should rather tend to lower these articles instead of putting them up in price. No, it is not on "account of the war" that we aro pa)ing such outrageous prices for marketing. It is'because these prices are asl,ed and we town people yield to the de mand. That is the whole secret. We have never been in the habit of complaining be cause of high prices, but really it is almost impossible for a man of ordinary business I o maintain his family at the present rates of living. It amounts to an imposition and an outrage. Another thing is felt in our market, and this is the want of room. We believe many more farmers would bring their products to market but fir this cause. Let our town au thorities build anoth,r wing to the market house and remedy this evil Considering the population of our town, the present tiler het-house is entirely too small. We hope the Council will look at this evil and apply the remedy.-- Volunteer.
