Department of the South
The Defeat at olustee ' Florida—Union Loss
Over one Thousand— Gen. Seymour ar
rested—Gen. Dodges put in command and
Reinforced.
NEW YORK, Feb, 27.—The steamer Ful
ton from Port Royal, which arrived at this
port last night, with dates to the 24th, re
ports that a battle had been fought near
Glustee Florida, bmween our troops and a
Wang force of the rebels, but no particulars
ire given, all private letters and news des
patches, which should have arrived by the
Fulton, having been detained by orders from
Gen. Gilmore.
ADVANCE TOWARD LAKE CITY.
We learn, however, from private sources,
that the steamer Cosmopolitan had arrived
at Hilton Head, with wounded troops on
board from:Jacksonville, and bringing a re
port that the troops which had advaced to
ward Lake City had been repulsed and driv
en hack on Jacksonville. Three hundred
wounded were on board the Cosmopolitan,
It Li asserted that we lost one thousand
men in killed, wounded, and missing. The
Union forces were largely outnumbered.—
ReinforcenientS were on their way to Flor
ida from Hilton Head. is not improba
ble that, this repok is somewhat exaggerat
ed.
The .steamers BroWnsv•ille and liarHet
Weed had been lost in St. John's river.-- ;
The latter ran aground and was blown up
by her crew to prevent her lalling itito the
hands of the r3bels.
LATER
From an rflicer arrived in the Fulton, we
derive Some further particulars of the disas
ter to•our forces near Lake City.
Gen. Seymour, who command 41 the ex
pedition has been placed under arrest, by r
.der of Gen. Gilmore.
His successor is Gen. Vogrles, who left
Hilton Head on Tkies , ]ny last, with rein
torcements for Jacksonville, consisting of
an entire division.
Our information says it was the opinion
of officers Who took "part in the expedition
that our total losses in killed, wounded, and
missing, are between 1,200 arid 1,500.
THE BATTLE GROUND
Olustee, the place where Gen. Seymour
fought and was beaten, is a stioion on the
Jacksonville and Tallehasse itrilroad, forty
eight miles west of Jacksonville. The Port
Royal Free South asserts that Baldwin is
held by our forces. This a station at the
junction of the Jacksonville and the Fer
nandina Railroads, twenty miles from Jack
- ' • --
A report comes from Hilton Head that
.Gen. Hardee commanded the rebel forces
and that his troops were a part of Bragg's
army it is more likely that they were a part
of Beauregard's force. Gen. Gilmore has
.sent reinforcements to Jacksonville ; and as
the-battle at Olustee was fought just a week
ago to-day, it is possible that before this
.Gen. Vogdes has met the enemy again.—
The regiments he commands are first-rive
material, and unless the enemy is before him
overwhelming. force, he will be apt to
move ahead towards Tsllehassee.

FIRE.—On Tuesday morning last a fire
' broke out in the large frame building on West
d'enn street owned by Rufus E Shapley Jr.
The house was occupied as a tenement house
,by eight negro farnilie,, all of whom wig be
thrust out at this inclement season of the year
without a roof to shelter totem. Our fire
,companies were present, but were so late
„getting into action that the ep.tire building
was consumed.

with the details from volunteer regiments
now on duty at Carlisle Barracks presented
,Lieut. John JI. Th nripson, kijetant of the

,has both by his official and social demeanor
while here shown that he was worthy of this
gratifying testimonial, and we feel assured
,that Eiie future conduct will ever be such as
give the donors no case of regret that they
,have placed so noble a trust in hie keeping.
PROFESSOR WILSON'S I, ECTURE.—On
Tuesday evenil g Prof. \,‘,
.. r ms ON delivered his
lecture on "Our place in History," in
Rheern's Hall. The extreme inclemency of
the weather prevented the attendance of
many who were anxious to hear him, but
those who did attend Were fully repaid by
the very instructive and entertaining dis
course.
The speaker argued that the history of an
individual man wits an epitome of the world's
history ; and that each was divided into three
distinct and plainly !narked periods—those
of the finite, the infinite,,and the
,relation of
one to the other. Taking the earliest civiliz
ation of the East to correspond w,it h the first
Or credulous phase of Unman life, lie proved
that the second epoch in the history of hu
manity and the world was exemplified in the
Grecian age, when each department of na
ture was represented by its appropriate deity,
worshipped as the highest,' onception of the
infinite.
England was the birth-place of the idea
Of a supreme deity, and with it came the
revelation of the Bible, and the first step in
the development of constitutional liberty.—
