The Board of Managers of the Soldiers' Aid
800iety respectfully submit their second quar
terly Report.
The statements to be made by the Treasurer,
the purchasing Committee and the Steward
will present the details of the money receipts
and disbursements, and of the articles made
- and distributed by the Society. There seems
to be no further' need of report on those sub
jects.
We are pleased to announce that much more
activity prevails in the community in refer
'once to the great object we have in hand, than
when our association was formed. How much
of this is due to our exertions, is really limns
terial to those who are working unse tisttly for
the welfare of our soldiers. It is however a
matter of deep regret to the Board, that a
misunderstanding has arisen between num•
bore of persons who are thee engaged. Be
fore a proper tribunal we are confident that
our action as a Society, will appear impartial
and conciliatory and such as befits an or
ganization designed to bo general and to em
brace as many of our citizens as possible.
There undoubtedly existed from the beginning,
a necessity that, the members of the Society
or the friends of the soldier, should associate
themselves in circles for sewing or other ac.
live labours to supply such articles as the de
mantis of the service require. And it is, in
our opinion, unfortunate indeed for the peace
of the community and for the credit of all
parties engaged in this work, that when such
- associations 'are - formed, efforts are not more
carefully made to harmonize all plans and to
make them co operative for still greater sue
oess in the future. We would fain hope that
this result may yet be reached. When we con.
eider that our Society numbers about 3(10
names, and that among them are most if not
all those persons who are known to be very
efficient and able workers in this community
in this good cause, it is deeply to be regretted
that alienation of feeling or a division of for
ces should result frotn one common aim We
will not suffer ourselves to believe that the
people of Carlisle cannot, as is commonly re
eorted; unite in - any' 'good - work, - - - hut - will
strive to bring about a better state of feeling
-and of action. If there is auy atssatisfactiou
with the Constitution of our Society or the
organization of cur Board, the annual meet
ing is at hand and the requisite changes can be
made. If there is any lack of power or of
adaptation to the wants or the claims of the
cause, it can then be remedied, and a plan
may be devised for as many auxiliary assn
ciations among our members or others as may
be desired. In any way in which, persons may
desire to raise money or to labour for the sot
dier's welfare, they may, if they will, have '
full power and the entire credit for what they
do, without directly ignoring an association
so liberally constituted and so generously
large in its organization. But if any be dis
posed to act entirely irrespective of a S
ty which perhaps numbers them among its
.members, and to pursue a wholly separate
career, we have neither time nor desire to en.
. ter into ..ny controversy on the subject, We
;shall bo content to let the public judge
which course is most seemly.
Our relations with the Sanitary and Chris.
lien Commissions are friendly and beneficial.
We have an associate manager of the former
body, although maintaining still over bade
pendence, as originally constituted. We are
indebted to the latter tur a donation of reading
matter to the soldiers stationed here, and for
interesting information by it public lecture de
livered in town, representing the operations
of the Commission and the condition of our
prisoners iu Richmond. It is especially grati
fying to record that the only rivalry existing
between the two commissions is as to their
capacity to do good ; and that t hey assist each
other in ministering to the armies in the field.
The generous Donation of one hundred and
twenty dollars from Prof. Marshall the U. S.
consul at Leeds and Mr R. M. Stevenson
biz agent at Sheffield, England, though in
cludel in the Treasurer's report, seems to
deserve especial mention. We have form
ally return,;:d our acknowledgemmats to the
donors.
The action taken at our, last quarterly meet
ling for the relief of the families of soldiers
resident in our midst, by the appointment of
a oominittee to visit and report on their wants,
hes led to the disbursement Of considerable
sums in a way that has commended itself to
the judgement of the Board. Pledges, very
distinctly made to some of the men still in
arms, require redemption; and we must not
shrink from the task of distributing us faith
fully as we way. the funds that may be devo
ted to that use. The ladies who have acted
as visitors certainly deserve our heartiest
thanks for the pains and labour expended in
this behalf. It may be that they have.found
need which they could not relieve, or some
difficulty in determining the exact measures
of help to be bestowed. But we only claim to
do the best we can, not at all to be infallible,
and we can very cordially endorse the action
of our visiting committee.
We are happy to know that several plans
are projected to add to the funds of the Suoie-
Aty. The Children's Fair to beheld on the
23d inst., is designed in part fur our Soeie•
Ay. The Hayden and Handel Society have
proffered us a benefit in the shape of a con•
.9ert, and a committee has been appointed to
zo-operate with them. Arrangements are al
:tio begun for a Lecture on an interesting top
10. For all these enterprises we bespeak the
generous support of the community, hoping
Abet profit and pleasure may thereby be com
bined.
• In conclusion it seems necessary to suggest
gnome change in our Constitutional pro , (Mon
tfor an Anniversary meeting on the 22nd Feb.
Other appointments for that date will inter.-
Ore .with our own, and our's with them. The
gloeiety Aria probably find no difficulty in ar
