    . CONDEMNED HORSES.—Since the late
Government sale, of horses at the Fair
Ground, we see "veteran quadrupeds" at al
most every street corner carrying many on
their backs who heretofore were ready to cry
out "a horse I a horse 1 my kingdom for a
horse l"
110 W TO SAVE YOUR COAL.—Now
that, coal has reached a price which is almost
tanpreeedented, and that the dealers propose
to raise it, if possible, during the present
Winter, there are thousands of families where
the members will thank us heartily for the
following directions, which if followed, will
give them a good fire during the &hole winter
on a. quantity of coal so small that it will
called some to marvel greatly. The directions
are as follows:
The a ' liihes or cinders are not to be thrown
away, but dampened to a kind of mortar, and
'again placed on the fire. They burn readily,
and by so doing there is the economy of hav
ing a hot fire with one-tenth of the fual, be
bides not being troubled to convey the ashes
to a receptacle We do not know of a stove
that cannot make ashes enough to supply it
only a few nuggets of coal being used.—
kirst make a fire in the usual way, and when
it begins to burn freely, place a lump of coal
(the best) near the stove door or front of the
irate ; then heap on the wet ashes or cinders,
and peek them down, the vent below tielog
nnobstrueted. The process is simple, and a
few trials will satisfy the uubmievers. Last
Coal may be used in the same way, and we
ere assured that many cellars have mutes of
4realth in the refuse of former years. While
coal is so emirce and so costly, should
_not
liconorny prompt a trial of a plan pointed out,
Which is attended with so little trouble and a
paring of labor ?

Tory good aria palatable, and everything necessary for
their comfort xruvided. Ettatrvaltin Indicates that
the steward Is inlet outing to uoiko all who are in hie

by his assiduous application. Wo might roasonably
suppose that amidst - the number of paupers there, the
place should ROOM gloom and subletting. but on the
Contrary we tied the droater part cheerful and merry
