HALF SKEET. -We are compelled in
consequence of the distracted state of our
community, arising from the imminent danger
of rebel invasion to curtail our regular week
ly issue to a half sheet. We hope by neat
week to resume our business with renewed
vigor, and to chronicle the expulsicn of the
rebel invader, with the punishment his tomer,-
ity seems to invite.
di'On Wednesday night, an inde
pendent company of Maryland infantry, un
der command of Capt McGovvAN, arrived here
and proceeded immediately to Shippensburg,
where they'are at present, the advance of the
Union forces in the. Valley.. All honor to
Maryland. She is the first to the rescue..
CAVALRY COMPANY. -Mr. DA viD
BLACK, is engaged in raising a cavalry com
pany for the six months service. Persons
joining this company will avoid the draft.,
and can either furnish their own horses, re•
ceiving pay for their service from the gov
ernment, or can be furnished with horses by
the government. Mr. Itratimt is a gentleman
of great popularity, and we have no doubt
will fill up his company rapidly. Apply at
once to him at the Mansion House.
INFANTICIDE.—A. girl flamed Corn -
man, living about two miles north of this
place, gave birth to an illegitimate child
few nights since, and immediately slier cut
its throat with a largo pocket..knife. Coroner
Smith held an inquest, and committed the
girl to the custody of the Sheriff. As the
case will bo tried at our next Court we for•
bear stating further particulars.—. Dim.
ACCIDENT.,-,011 Friday last.,
Richard Jackson, a carpenter by trade, and
resident of North Middleton township, whilst.
Working uridn the roof of a new barn building
for Mr. John Darr, was seized with an epi
leptic fit, and fell to the ground, striking a
fence in his fall, which caused his death in
about two hours. Mr. J. was about twenty--
five lears of age and a single man lie had
been for some time subjeot to similar fils.—Detn.
.TOWN MEETING.—A meeting of the citi
zens of Carlisle and vicinity, was held in the
Court House, on Monday evening, to take
into consideration the course to be pursued
in the event of the Rebels approaching the
town. Col. R.IM. Henderson .wasicalled to
the chair; Mr. Jno. Stuart, jr.,anq D. N.
Mahon, weremppointsd Vice PreNlo'nts, and
M r . H. S. Ritter and H. Newshman, Esq.,
Secretaries. After an interchange of senti
ment, the following named gentlemen were
