DINNER Ti) THE SOLDIERS.—OR Sat
urday afternoon last we had the pleasure of
attending the dinner provided for the otli•
cers“tnd men of companies A. and G of the
130th regiment. The dinner was given at
the Meeting house Springs, and to say that
everything passed oil' in the best of style
would be tautology, as every one who is ac
quaintedavith the manner in which Major
Bretz gets up tiles.° matters, is well aware
that nothing would, be left undone to make
the occasion one long to be remembered by
all who were the favored participants.
The dinner.was served about one o'clock,
and to the large party then and theta assem
bled, we know it gave as general satisfaction
the most perfect epecurean could desire.
The tables were spread in the grove skirting
th,,ereek, and were bountifully covered with
all' the Subkantials, luxurie.4, delicacies, el
cdeivs, of a splendid feast. There were no
speeches, songs or toasts—a slight mistake
we think, on such an occasion. The day
was delightful, every I',l
y and noth
ing occurred to mar the pleasure of the occa
sion. About three o'clock- the solders re
turned to town, when they were dismissed.
All then returned to their peaceful

of law. Pievious to th.: breaking out of the

militia company of that pltree, and when
activellostilities commenced .this company
was milled into the rebel 3crrice. Mr. P. re

+Wetly oppoitted to the, rebellion...On this
account he was refused permission to witi-l

compelled to march vith it. Being closely
watched he -"vas forced to 'remain until idte .

then returned to Martinsburg. A short time
after this he vas coo. crtpictl, mid being

a rebel prison for some 'six works. One
uight he with sonic six or seven othersinade
their escape, and after many difficulties and
narrow escapes, they made their way to the
union troops then under command of Gen.
Fremont, who at once gave them a pass to
lbe noftb.
We make this statement in justice to an
'earnestly loyal man, who has lost his all be
cause Of his refusal to join the fortunes of
'Jeff. D4vis, and because u.anv unjust 'and
unfoUnded reports of his conduct had
reaclhed. his acquaintances and friend:3 here.
We, in common with most of our citizens,
were misled by these rumors, and were led
to believe that he hail became an active
traitor to his country. Pint we have since
seen such indubitable evidence of our mis
take that we arc right glad to correct it.
Idr. Parker gives a graphic ace u mit o f the
destitution and suff, ring of the eebels in
Virginia, the defection and insuborbination
of many of their troops, especially the Irish
conscripts. Ile thinks that tbe fall of V ick s
'burg would be such a blow to them that the
destruction of.their entire goverdment would
be'ebtinparatively easy.

We are led to the adoption of the above,
from a conversation we had a few days since
with a friend of ours, in relation to certain

position they aspire to, and even if they_ at
