THE BORCUOLI ELECTION :—Our bor bugh election will be held on next Friday the 21st and the importance of selecting good men for the several offices cannot be too strongly At best, they have a thankless duty to perform, and consequently those best qual ified are reluctant to have their names used in bonneel ion with these offices. The present is no time to nominatsi strict party tickets, and even if it were, it is not always expedient_ to introduce political questions - in our borough elections. When the community delegate their power, to the officers constituted under the Shatter, it is for the purpose of having the 4 3orolighitffairs faithfully and judiciously man aged. All good citizens can join in promo ting this object, and the way to do so most effectually is to unite in the support of suita lile men, regardless of party affiliation, or the suggestions of those who are clamorous for i.dficial patronage. PROTOCI RAPIN. —Since the discovery of Daguerre, by which a reflection of the face Was transferred by the sun to metallic plates, the improvements in the art have been re markable, and the artistic skill now displayed in shading and coloring photographs on pa per, has thrown miniature and portrait paint ing entirely in the shade. As a Profesi'mr of this beautiful art we take great pleasure in noting the fact, that Mr. C. L. LOCIIMAN of tilts place, has no superior outside of Phila delphir or New York, and is perhaps-equal to the best in either of these cities. Ile is a good chemist and therefore brings to the busi ness n high degree of scientific knowledge.; consequently his pictures are models of truth fulness and artistic excellence. THE "OLD FOLKS" CONCERT have seldom, if ever, seen a larger or more respectable audience than were assembled in Itheent's Hall on Wednesday evening at the concert of the ".Old Folks," They fully sus tained their reputation as accomplished vocal ists, and the hearty applause of those present, fully testified bow much they . appreciated the music: The selections consisted of several pieces of church music, besides popular solos, glees and choruses, all of which were rendered with fine effect. The troupe consists cftsttclve performers most of them dressed in ancient costume, and one of the ladies, Mrs. Nichols, had a dress which was worn by tprce❑ Eliza beth fliers than 300 years ago. It Was presen ted to her in London by a lineal descendant of Lord Burleigh. Mrs. Shepherd and Mrs. Nichols are both fine vocalises and rendered their solos with great sweetness and flexibili ty of voice. The concerts were repealed on Thursday(afternoon and evening, and we feel sure that the favorable impression they have made will ensure them crowded houses should they favor us with another visit. The remains of the deceased arrived at this place on Thursday evening and were taken to the residence of his father, JOHN EWING, living on the Walnut Bottom road for interment. Shippcnsburg News. St. Patrick's Day. "When Irish hills were fair and green, And Irish fields were white with daisies, And harvests golden and corona, Slept In the lazy sumonor hazes : When bards went singing through the town, Their grand old songs of knightly awry. And hearts were found In every hand And ail was peace and love and glory, , 'Twas In the happy, happy days When ovary peasant lives In clover, And in the pleasant woodland Ono foyer met the begging rortr; .Whoa all was honest large and true, And naught was hollow or theatrle ; 'Twos in the days of golden hue, That Ireland knew the great St. Patrick." History' and " common fame," are con ceded to be the greatest liars in, the world; but, notwithstanding this admitted fact, we shall attempt to give a brief historical sketch of the distinguished Saint, whose name heads this article. " St Patrick, the apostle and patron of ire land, was born at Tours, in Gaut, about 873 Ilis uncle Wl6 the great St. Martin, Bishop of Tours. His father was Calpaurnis ; his moth. er's name Couchessa. In 389, being sixteen years old, he was taken captive iu Bretagne, and was brought to Ireland, where he was sold to Milcho Iluttnan, a pretty prince of Dal ardia, in Antrim whom he served sometime as a swineherd. In 393 he was released from servitude and returned to his relatives. Patrick for thirty five years studied under his uncle, St. Martin, by whom he was'nuade deacon. About 401 he went to Rome, where he studied the Scriptures for six years. In 429 he accompanied St. German to expel Pe lagiauistn from Britain; and in 432 was ap• panted by Pope Celestine to preach to the Irish. flu proceeded to Dalardia, where his old master, Milcho, lived. Ile next went Son tit war I, Westward and Northward, until he arrived at Tara. Here he converted prince Counall, grandfather to St. Coludtbkill.— In 434 -he-travelled _ to—Connaught.. ._whero..he converted the daughters of King Leoghair.— Now, in imitation of Christ, Moses and Elias, he fasted forty days, and, according to Joce line, gathered the tribes of reptiles and ser pents, and drove them into the ocean. In -145 he built a cathedral, enlarged nod beauti. tied Armagh, and fixed his archiepiscopal Sce in it. —We In 443 he held a synod, and enacted many valuable canons in Armagh. Ile now pissed through Leinster to Dublin, baptized the king and people, and by his Stall of Jesus" a fountain issued, near which he built a cathe dral. According to the _Black Book, quoted by Usher, St. Patrick celebrated Mass in one of the subterraneous vaults, over which Christ Church waszubsequently built in 1038. In 454 he founded the Church of Ardagh, and consecrated St. Mael its bishop For six years he made his circuits around Ulster, I,einster, mid other parts of Ireland. In 41i1 he made a journey to the Pope, to whom he gave an authentic account of the fruits of his mission The Pope received him with joy, confirmed nhis apostolat e of Ireland, llll , l armed him With legal tee. powers. On his return he passed through Britain, where he destroyed Paganism excomtnunica ted the wicked prince, Curotick, and estab lished numerous monaQteries and churches Ile now for thirty years reviewed hi; labors. animated his flock, built churches, ordained priests, consecrated bishops, founded locates teries and nunneries, held councils, wrote his confessitms. rules and canons, removed abu ses, anal, after due rebrement and contempla tion, died in the Abbey of Paul, on the 17th of March, 493, in the one hundred and twen tieth year of his age, and Was buried at Dawn, which gave rise to that verse."
