THE CAUSES OF ILL HEALTH IXPROPRIF,TrOF EATING. -4 When riding oti"i' looomOtive last week • , and talking with the. engineer, as I had . the privilege of doing, I Cohld ~.that but think, how ditch wiser men Were .about iron and steel machines, thin they were a-, hunt' fleshy and osseous maChines. The re lation bf the pump to , the 'capacity of the • boiler: the relation of the furnace to the • size of the flues ; the • relation of the eyl • , inder; or of the steam generated, to the. work to be alone—'all these things were in the engineer's mind. He was ice'chain •-r -uously watching every part and opening and shutting valves on every side, so as to keep every part in its, proper condition. The stoker or . fireman applying. or • . withholding food, so as to-keep the en : .• gine in just that state in' which it would. work best, according , to whether we were running on ant up-grade or a down-grade, or on levet.ground, acid according to the number and weight of the card being , - drawn for. we had 'been drawing along and ponderouVrain.. • Now how many , are there who watch their I urnace, to see that....they get inpeith er too •Inoeft. nor too little fuel'? Men shovel food : without ,-any 'regard to what 'it is , going to 'do!, If it is the, • Sabbath gay, when- . they have lesS air and exercise .than any other days, and when their atom , • acts are not, in a' condition to digest as much food. as on, other days, they eat a 'double portion. fitis a day when they are:to undergo severe taxation and work, • and when they can least afford to go with out food, oftentimeS, they become anxious' and neglect to cat because the body needs Ale basis of Thud less than at any otlfef time,.they.,,,eat the , most, and when it needs it. inofe than any other time, they eat - flue - least,: - Our food'is a means to an end. • It is_ simply the fuel with which •, we are - to raise steam for carrying on the purposes of life. A man should eat as much on 'principle as he prays. I have been asked,: sometimes, how I could perforin so large an•ainotint of work with apparently so little, diminution of strength I attribute my power of en durance to a long formed habit of observ ing, every 4ay or my life, the simple laws of eating. It has become a second nature to me. 'lt ceases any longer to be a mat ter Of self-denial. It is almost like an in :, stinct. If I had a severe tax ,on my brain in the morning, I can not eat hard ly at breakfast, If the whole day is to be one of nervous.exertion, I eat very.lit tle till the exertion is over. I know that two forces cannot be concentrated in ac tivity at the same time ih one body. • I know that when the stomach works the brain must rest, and that when the brain works the stomach must rest. If I am going to be moving about out of hors a good deal' . then -I can give a• fuller swing to my appetite—which is never exceedingly bad. But_if I ant en• gaged actively and successively in mental labor, I cannot eat too much. And I. have made eating with regularity, and with reference with what I have to do, a habit so long,. thet•it ceases any longer to be a subject of thought. It almost takes care of itself. I attribute much of my a bility to endure work to good habits of eating, and constant to the kWh of sleep, physical -exercise and general cheerfulness. - • There is one thing.moro to be-said in this connection. •It is• not a matter of epicureanism that a•man shouli be dain ty concerning the food be cats. On the contrary I hold that a civilized man ought to be civilized in his cookery. I suppose one of the signs of the . millenium will be a better regulated kitchen—a kitchen that sends rut food that will not -make Christian 'men sick ! _Henry maid Beech er, MO HOEING There is no work tint requires to be done more thoroughly and yet speedily than hoeing. The rapid growth of weeds and grass among crops is one of the inci dents of the climate, about which there are as many advantages as disadvantages. If the warm weather protnotes the growth of weeds, it alSo'helps along the crop full as well. The only difficulty occurs from the fadt thdt the soil may be so foul with the seeds of weeds, and they having been sown so long previously that they are ready to sprout before the seed of the potato or the corn has a chance to compete with them in getting • above ground. This is particularly the case with the small seeds, which seldom get headway as quick as the weeds, even though steeping and oth er expedients may be resorted to for the purpose of giving them a start. In no woriris--thn_eld familiar adage of " stitch in tithe saves nine' t e applicable than ;during the season of heel . If possible, the•-cultivator ought to he n through as early as possible after th young plant shows itself. A cultivate for this kind of- work should be light nd narrow, so that there is, no fear of it injuring the row of plants, sad made so thit it will stir 'the ground, .whilst tearing up the weeds. A corn cultivator shouldbe made specially for that one crop, and if to be used on light ground, it should be differ ent even from. that which is to be - pod upon a stiff soil. AsToon as the corn cul tivator does its work, the hoe should be made to do its work well. The hills should be cleaned' out thoroughly and freed from every particle of grass or other weeds, the ground well loosened around each stock of oorn, and then work again with the cultiitator. This kind of w k ,pays, because it is done in tipiettivict, e crop gets the whole benefit of it dun g the growing season.—.lffieltigan Farmer Cows CA Sin' HOLD, BACK THEIR MILK.—Dr. Dodd, in the American Stock Journal, says a cow cannot exercise any control over her hitteal organs, and gives this' as the reason :—" Tho musou: Jar tissues which compose the parts direct. ly in the region of the lacteal duct, or milk c !tunnel; are involuntary muselis. Were it not, so, any cow, might, by volunta2y relaxation of the muscles which guard the outlet of the mammary, gland, evacuate at any time her - own milk, and thus de fraud her owner." STOMACH BITTERS. The proprietors and manufacturers of HOS TETTER'S CELEBRATED STOMACH BIT TERS can appeal with. perfect confidence to physicians and citizens generally of the United States, lincause the article has attained a repu tation heretofore unknown. A few facts upon this point will :speak more powerfully, than volumes of bore assertion or blazoning inaffery. The consumption of Ilostetter's Stomach Bit ters for the last year amounted to over a half million bottles, and from ita manifest steady increase in times past; it is evident that during the coining year the consumption will reach near ono million bottles. This immense amount could never, - have been sold but for the rare medicinal properties contained iii the propara. lion, and the sanctioh'of the most prominent physicians in those sections of the country where the article is best known, Vho not only recommend the Bitters to their fallouts, but are ready at all times to give testimonials to its efficacy in all Cases of stomachic derangements ' intr . :the diseases resulting therefrom. This is not a temporary popularity, obtained by extraordinary efforts in the way of - trum peting the qualities of the Bitters, but a solid estimation of an invaluable medicine, which is destined to be as enduring as time itself. ' Ilostetter's Stomach Bitters have proved a Godsend to regions where fever and ague and various other biliotis' complaints have counted their victims by hundreds. To be able to state confidently that the "Bitters" are a certain cure for- the Dyspepsia and like diseases, is to the proprietors a source of un alloyed pleasure. It removes all morbid Matter from the stomach, purifies the biped, and imparts renewed vitality to the nervous system, giving it that tone and 'energy indispensable for the restoration of health. It operates upon the stortitich, liver, and other digestive organs, mildly but powerfully, and soon restores them to a condition essential to the healthy discharge of the funetioni of nature. - Elderly persons may use the Bitters daily as per.directions on the bottle, and they will find in it a stimulant pectiliarly adapted to comfort declining years, as it is pleasant to the palate, Invigorating to the bowels, excellent as a tonic, and rejuvenating generally. We have the ovi dence.of thousands of aged - men and women who have experienced the benefit of using this preparation while suffering from stomach de rangements anti general debility; acting under the advice of physicians, they have abandoned tell deleterious drugs and fairly tested the merits of this article. A few words to the gentler sex. There are certain periodi - when, • their cares are so:harassing that many of them sink under the trial. The relation of mother and and child is so absorbingly tender, - Ihat the . mother, especially if she be young, is apt to forgot her own health in her extreme anxiety for her infant, Should the period of maternity' arrive during the summer season, the wear of body and mind is generally aggravated. Here, then, is a necessity for a stimulant to recupe rate the energies 8I the system, and enable the mother to bear up under her exhausting trials and responsibilities. ,Nursing mothers gene. rally: prefer the Bitters to all other invigora 7 tore that receive' the endorsement of 'physi cians, because It is agreeable; to the taste as .well as certain to give a permanent increase of bodily strength. All those persons, to ;whom wo have particu larly referred above, to' wit: sufferers from fever and ague, caused by malariti,,diarrhcea, dysentdy, indigestion, less of appetite, and all diseases or derangements.ef the stomach, superannuated 'invalids, pereone of sedentary occupation,. and nursing mothers, will consult their own physical welfare by giving to Hos-, 'tatter's Celebrated'Sicanach Bitters a trial. .
