CONCOIeD
The Concord is it rampant grower, very
liarly, though not apt bear well until it
attains the ago of five or six years wben it
becomes productive enough, but never suf
fers from overbearing like the Isabella.
: . Persons who likie no time 'or are un
willing to.take the rouble to prune OM •
vines, should by all means .procure- e
f r„
Concurd.• IFwill bear the coldest w ath
er that we have in New York, uninjured
without shelter orproteetilen ' and will
thrive and produce' fruit of fair' quality
when planted in the poorest soil. The
foliage is large; broad and thick, and.the
berries nover, mildew or rot,' but when
dead ripb they sometimes drop from tho
cluster. 999 Massachusetts friends say
i
tlmt it s 4 .', four weeks earlier than the
Isabella, and that it is fully ripe from the
3d to the 10th of September." . '
Now, I will not 'say that such is not the
ease in MassecliGetts, but I will say, that
with me, it is only about ono week earlier
than the Isabella, and not what I call fully
ripe till' the lattbr part of September, when
it will be found quite melting. and far
richer in the saccharine principles than
the Irittbella, but ha9lnueh more of the fox •
fragrance. 'A few pounds of the fruit,

large 'room. Some persons are very fond
of this foxy odor, ° -and'to others it is very
offensive Last fall(1859)1 hitl quite a
fine lot of these grapes; which sold in
market the same as good Isabellas... The
vine is much hardier than the Isabella,
which makes it a valuable acquisition fo
gripe growers in tho northern sections of
our country.—[Correspondent of Illoore!s

THE STRAW BEE'HY
Mr: R.. • Pardee;• of New York, in a lee
thin at-Yale r.College, on the"strawberry
says ;
The follving, to cultivate that fruit, is
the best InetlKT: Select a warm, moist,
but exposed situation ; for early berries let
it slope to the east or south; for late ones
to the north. The soil should be a. fine
gravelled loam. Avoid high, barren soils,
and those which are wet: . To prepare the
soil, make it clean; underdrain, leaving
the drain open at both ends, to allow the
6re - dation of air. Pulverized at least
two feet in depth, making ten per cent.
of the soil as fine as superfine flour. For
manure, apply thirty-bushels alien slack
ed with water, holding three bushels of
salt in solution to the acre,
Transplanting should be done with
-care, and the rootlets at the plant injured
as 'little as possible. The best time to
'tratisplant is in the spring, though, with
care,_ it may be,done any time during the
summer. The lectuter said be would, in
starting a new bed, place the plants three
feet apart. Water may -be added with
great advanta,gO, qtantities, ex
Cept during the, frolvering and ripening
periods, pOvided always ) it does not stand
and - become stagnant on the soil. The
hoe should never be used about the plants,
as it injures the roots. The productive
ness of the strawberry about New. York
does not average more than forty bushels
to :the acre. There is no difficulty in
raising one..hundred and fifty bushels un
der the cultivation recommended. , In the
IVintorthe plants should be lightly cov
ered. .
THE DEPTH OF TREES
There has recently sprung-up some con
troversy as to' the proper depth that trees
should be transplanted, and as is usual in
controversies of this kind among practi
cal nien, there is not the least hope of
their ever coming to a. common opinion
on the-question. And this is natural'and
perhaps as it should be. Different kintls
of trees frequently require different modes
of culture, beginning with 'the planting.
For instanco, dwarf pears should be planted
deep, two or three inches below the union
of the quince with the pear, io all soils
where a dwarf pear ()tight to be. A fir
or, spruce should be plinted shallow, and
so, as a rule, should standard pear as well
as apple trees. This exception should
however be made : itt light, .porous, -soils
they may be guaged deeper than in clay
moulds. Thus the heoyier the soils the
shallower should 'the trees be planted.
Such is our experience. •
EGG-PLANTS
In reply to' a subscriber in Solebury,
Bucks - county, as to the proper time. of
"f setting out egg-plants, the Germantown
Telegraph says they should not'be trans'-'
'planted before the 28th of May. Usually
- .the first week in Juno is the safest period.
They are exceedingly sensitive to cold,
and a single frost will retard their growth
from •one to two weeks. 'When Such
nights occur place over the plants any
thing to protect them—boxes, pots, or old
newspapers. Eggplants, as well as to
mato plantS, should be transplanted in the
hot-bed, say from six to eight inches apart,
to secure strong, well-bushed plants.
Grapes From Cuttings
-1- send you the following remarks on tho
propagation of grape vines from cuttings,
which may be done with very little troub
le:— Have a box two feet high, and about
two and a half ivide;— the length as you
require, —fill half full of well-pulverized
soil; preiare the cuttings with three eyes
—out smooth below the bottom one ; place
them in a slanting position, with • the last
bud just abOve the soil; take six-penny
white cotton cloth, and nail tightly over
the box ; give warm soft water freely,
every evening; place the box in a sunny
nook, and in a few vveeks.your box will be
tilled with grape vines, ready for potting or
planting in borders.— Correspondence of
the Albany Cultivator.
TO KEEP OFF INSECTS FROM VINES.—
We preceive that an Erigliph journal puts
forth the statement that the common elder
bush, scattered among cucumber and
melon vines, will ket3p off the bugs which
infest theta. Ts this so? Has any reader
of the Weekly Sun over tried it If yea,
please let us hear from him at once. If
nay; then let as many as can, give it; a trial

HOSTETTER'S
STOMACH BITTERS.
The proprietors and manufacturers of HOS
TETTER'S CELEBRATED STOMACH BIT
TERS CM' appeal Alen peramt confidence to
physician') and citizens generally of the United
States, because the article has attained a repu
tation heretofore'-unknown. A few facts upon
this point will speak more powerfully than
volumes of bare assertion or bin zonindpuffery.
The consumption of Ilostetter's Stomach Bit
ters for the last year amounted to over a half
,bottles, end froM its manifest steady
increase in times past, it is evident that during
the coining year the consumption will reach
near one million bottles.

physiciafia in those sections of the country
where the article is Lest known, who not only
recommend the Bitters to. their patients, but
are ready at all times to give testimonials to its
efficacy' in all cases of stomachic derangements'
and the diseases resulting therefrom. •
This is not a temporary popularity, obtained
by extraordinary efforts in the way of true
poling the qualities of the Bitters, but a solid
estimation of nn invaluable medicine, which is
destined to be as enduring as time itself.
Hostel ter's St °mask Bitters have proved
a Godsend to region; where fever and ague
and various other ;)ilious complaints have
counted their victinn bY hundreds. To be
able to state confidattly thatl"the "Bitters"
are a certain cure for the Dyspepsia and like
diseases, is to the proprietors a source of un
allo.yapleashre. It removes all morbid matter
from the stomach, purifies the blood, and
imparts renewed vitally to the microbus system,
giving it that tone and energy indispensabie
for llimrestm:ation of health: It operates upon
the stomach, liver, aid oilier digestive organs,
mildly L 4 powerfully, and soon restores them
to a comfit ion essentiXl to the healthy discharge
of the functions of zature.
Elderly persons may use the Bitters daily as
per directions . .an thedmottle, and they will find
in a stimulant pecaliarly adopted to comfort
deaining years, ns ills pleasant to the palate,
invigorating to the bowels, excellent as a tonic,
and rejuvenating generally. Woilavo the evi

who have experienctid)the benefit of using this
prCparation while suffering from stomach do

the advice of physicians, IheY. have abandoned
all deleterious' drugs and fairly tested Alm
merits of this article. A few words to the
gentler sex. Theta are certain periods when
their cares are so harassing that ninny of them
sink under the trill. The relation of mother
and child is so obsorbingV tender,"that the
mother, especially if she be young, is apt to
forget ier own heath iii her extreme anxiety
for her infant. Skald the period of maternity
arrive during the summer season, the' wear of
body and mind is gendally aggravated. Hero,
then, is a neM4iiity for a stimulant to reoupe
, rate the energies, of the system, and enable the
mother to bear up under her exhausting. trials
and responsifiilities, Nursing mothers gene
rally prefer the Bitters to all other invigora

well as certain to give a permanent increase
of bodily strength. (`"
All those persons, to lobar': wo have particu
larly referred above,, to wit: sufferers from
fever and ague, caused by malaria, diarrhoea,
dysentery, indigestion, loss of. appetite, and
all diseases or derangements of the stomach,
superannuated invalids, persons of sedentary
occupation, and nursing mothers, will consillt
their own physical welfare by giving to llos
tetter's Celebrated Stomach Bitters a trial.
