4griultin.ll ggitrintenl., PLANTING SHRUBBERY.—Too little tention, it. seems to tie, is given to this: • feature Of ornainental planting. Our rues!, improver generally persist in setting out. coarse flintier trees,. in rows like an or' chard, ail overlhoit grounds, and finish ing off.th:ir work by putting lilac or rose bushes around the door-way. , Well, this is better than:cothing.- But an improve - mont can be made on 'this, as the, Hollow= ingirints may show .1, ' Let the forest trees—except on large places— he few in.:number, and confined . mostly to the hound tries of one's 'pretiii:•es. The trees near the house should 4 smaller size, and such as have smooth' trunks and branches. A few shiclis•may, be sot near the dwelling. if the premises . are assail, like inost `village lots, single ;specimens of large shrubs may be set on the lawMand trained up as miniatnre trees. .This will give the place an appearance of larger extent than though it had been set with forest trees. Shrubs may also be planted hi - groups and tnasses, arranging them according to their respective heights. They stay also be used as screens to hide disagreeable objects, or to conceal. ,one part of. the grounds froin'the other.. They. appear very well, also, when used to en circle a flower garden j the central beds being occupied with plant's ' and. the Mm dariescet with shrubs, the lowest in front oind the highest in the Tear. • As belts to conceal from the house the outer %flees of- one's grounds, they are also useful. The 'pleasure' walks may be led in front of these beltA, and so afford a pleasant view of them all through the season: if they aTe'se.t here, instea lof liaing:eriiiided in - front of - the - heuse,,tlia lawn appears larger, and every way-he:ter. • A good assortment of shrubs will afford . ..one a variety of floireis,.nearly all Slimmer, and that with far less trouble than any other class of plants. •We willlatre Men tion a few of the desirable sorts to plant : Azaleas, in ttar:ety; Pyrus Aeon ; lto binia; Spirvea; Deutzia ; Huonymus; biseus; Hydrangea; Philadelphus; ;Syr inga ; Laburnum; Weigelia, ect. A' shrubbery is.a permanent 'allair, one of the "institutions " of a country-place, and should therefore be made well at the out eet,.and afterwards tak6n care of. Those well proved and - fast friends afford us in, the lung run, the greatest satisfaction.— alnterican .Ayrictinu rise. 4 . . 'SET OUT A FEW' MORE 'FRUIT TREES, ETC.—Yes, set out a cherry tree by the the gate near the road,. and another at the end bf'tie house to pn'ttially shade the sitting room from the hot sun The .cherry, when well trained, flartus a regu - ler, symmetrical tree, ornamental at-least when covered with "a profusion of snow ' • white bloom, - or bending bene)ult its loud of dark red fruit. Set a pear tree in the „ nook by the shed, and one at each end of —the carriage-house. They will injure notha 'jug, and the rich soil will cause them to gruvr. rapidly. Now put out a few, peach trees along the garden border where the shade will.searcely_injure_the_v_egetabksi or a few trees may be set compactly-45 feet apart. and the space theY would shade be used for raspberrietTSiiii - blackberrics. • There ie . the lane, too, leading to the pasture, which might well have a row of apple or pear trees upon each side, which will injure the adjacent fields far less 'than the returns they should give. The road Bide, also, can be set with apple trees yield ing winter fruit. - Such qingle rows of trees usually give better return than the same number of trees in an orchard. Again, there is the south side of the barn, shed and hovel r yes, and the tight fence upon the north side of the garden, which might be _covered with grape vines and yield many bushels of fruit. . Now, reader, look about your buildings, around the - yard, along the fences, etc , and see if there is not' room • for a few more trees. Then 'go to the nearest nur seryman, if ho is-an honest, careful grow - - er, and select your trees, have them taken up with all the roots, take them home without exposure to the sun, and set at once in large broad holes, spreading out the roots and fibers in their natural posi• tion. If the soil is not rich, add a dittle old manure or ground bones at the time' of setting, and hopefully await the result of your expenditures in time and money. —American Agriculturiit. A VALUABLE MANURE.—No manure is so well worth saving - in October and November as the falling leaves of the sea son. According to Payne, they contain nearly three times as much nitrogen as ordinary barn yard manure ; and eVery gardener who has strewn and cover s ed them in his trenches late in•the fall or in De cember, must have noticed the neat season how black and moist the soil is -that ad heres to the thrifty young beets he pulls. No vegetable substance yields its woody fibre and becomes soluble .quicker than leavesoind from this very ems° they are soon dried up, scattered to the winds and: wasted, if not gathered and trenched in, ' or composted, lefore the advent of severe winter. White turnips, including the yellow stone Aberdeen and others, which, though yellow, are of the same nature, will safely • endure but a moderate frost. The firm effect of the frost is to sweeten tbem, and render them more mild and pleasant fos 'the table. The same calve induces then to sprout more readily, to bacons corky or pithy at an early period. Fos table use they•should be harvested early before:severe.fiosts, the crowns or top -, cut off closely, - and stowed in barrels o open bine in a dark cool cellar. A, tem perature below thirty degrees in the field 'or cellar will injure them, and any growth -they may make in the field after this do .. gree of cold, seems to be of little value. —Homestead: . FARMYARDS. -A correspondent sug gests the following plan of constructing farm-yards: "First make the yard" level (large or small;) then commence in the middle and scoop est in the form of ,ari apothecnry'a scale, Tleepest in the middle, to thedepth of one foot in the deepest place. Then collect straw, leaves,76ld hay, bog grass, sawdust, or anything that can be made intomanare, fill it up level with a roW - of, mangers around the outside; then have living water in the yard' and when yon commence foddering ; shut, the bars or gate and keep every oreatuiikin the yard when not in the stable; then fill up with litter to give them a good bed, and keep doing so until spring, and the Manure is three feet deep or snore if Pos• Bible. Then dispose of it as best you. can. Some let it remain until Fall; and use it for top-dressing; others cart out in Spring, and commence filling up- again to keep the weeds from growing." • , nun' TREES—Ttain well And opal .lertt to' proper form, cutting beak as need= ed.
