Farm Work for February, tat p Antic* • The amount of work which our farmers and planters they have the opportunity of doing during the month of February will depend very. much upon the character of • the seasoms: It happens, not unfrequent ly, in the Middle states; that dime; are some two weeks of open weather in Feb ruary, and whenever stph an opening for field operations occurs, it should be eager ly seized-upon far the purpose of relieving in some measure the heavy pressure which always attends the labor dewanded.by the farni and. garden at the bre:Oiing up' of "winter. Wo need scarcely remind our friends of the obvious, fact that good cropS are as much dependent upon good manage ment as upon fertility of soil. ,No amount, of extra work will compensate for the want of seasonable preparations; for if the ground is iA.eady aseediMg at. the prop er time, the harvest prodUct will, in most eases, be Very Sensibly lessened. Inde-' pendently, however, of these considera tions; important . as they will be found in making up .the profit and loss account. at - the end of the year, the perfect ease and freedeta from anxiety, with which a given thing can be accomplished whenever it hag been undertaken in due time, ought to 'offer to every one sufficientindueemeut to embrace every favorable opportunity for 'pushing the work ahead before it•crowds in too fast, and becothes comparatively un manageable. Before, then, that period arrives; when - ell the pustomaryforeempou a farm is put into requisition, maiLwhile there aro yet a foi , spare days remaining, permit us in the quality of friendS, coun selors and c4nfidential advertisere, to, put the following questions: , Is all the wood required for use next season cut and corded; and is there a suf -ficienevof,dry wood cut into lengths and stored away ready for immediate service?. Are all yourlenees in good ordtir; your -gates-repai redj;-an d-di,good-store-of-rails- Mid posts cut, spht, amrpiled up under cov er, where 'they can be pointed and leived ,during inclement weather?. Is all your . elirt, !and•wagou and plot4h harness in good order?,, • have your carts and wagons, and farm implements -generally been' thoroughl: . overhauled and repaired; and have you laid by for use in case of contingencies a supply of shares, and plough points, and extra .bolts and screws? Have you made zreparationsifor kheap to be constructed of` marsh, and Meadow mud, woods' earth, and all, the rough fi brous materials and animal refuse tb be found upon your place? Have you commenced cleaning your barn-yard and. throwing its contents into piles; *here it may undergo that fetmen. tatty° process which renders the consti! tueuts more readily soluble, and therefore of. immediate benefit to the future &op? If all these things have been properly cared for, the work for the sdason has been well cotutnmiced, and the general opera tions of the farm will not have been retard. ed by causes that might haVe been avoid ed. Upon a portion of those operations. we now proceed to treat. WINTER PLOW' NO • If the season should prove to be an early one, seize the oportunity to break up any stiff clays thot you design to brim , under cultivation; proivded they arc in alit state for the reception of the pldw. It is ab solutely necessary that they should be in a proper condition for tillage before they are disturbed, or 'the evil effects arising from a contrary state of things will seri ously impair their productiveness No stiff clay soil should be plowed while it is wet and adhesive; fur it will then 'harden almost to.the consistence of mortar, and under such. circumstances it breaks into• clods, becomes almost inert, and is rarely susceptible of being brought under those atmospheric influences upon which the vigdr,of the growing plant so much de pends But if„ upon examination, it is found that the soil pulverizes readily be fore the plow, press the work 'forwsrd at once, and let the harrow follow immediate ly. PREPARINO FOR OATS Although it is entirely too early during this month to seed down to oats in any of the - Middle -States,it may yet be - p racti - ca- - ble to break up the ground in readiness for their reception; for the sooner oars are seeded after all danger of heavy frosts has disappeared, the more certain. WOl.be . the chances of a full crop if the land is in good condition. „. The soil - should be, plow ed deeply, and if of a clayey texture shuold be thormighly harrowed and cross-harrow= ed until it is completely pulverized; for the finer the seed bed is made the sooner the seed will quicken and germinate. As oats will flourish on almost any good soils, there is frequently less discrimination ercised than there miglirbliiiith regard to the most appropriate soil for bringing this most useful;cereal to perfection. It should, however, be always • borne in mind ,py those.who h .ve a chbiee of fields tb select from, that the best soil for the oat is tt moist, sleep, clay loam, abounding in vegetable mutter; the heaviest crops being always taken from fresh soils new ly brokett_up, and fromold pastures. Dry. gravelly or light sandy soils are, those that are the' mosrunfit for the production • of this grain: •1f oats'are cultivated' on stiff grass land, the Ward HhOuldbe turned co in pletely over to faroilitate, by its rapid de-• composition, the growth of the plant. ,1f the soil.has become itimmierished, it will, be found of essential advantage to give it: a top-dressiug of Other, of the following mixtures to:be itarrowedln with the seed: I.st..biight bushels of bone duet, '10: of * W-11-: es, lof plaster, and. 2 dealt.
