Wood Land
"Thiry malt timber slaml(l.be reserve(
On a fifty, seventy )i (Ir. one humlre(
acre Pion for use ?" - " •
BEING a resident. of one. of the_ finest
wooded sections of country that 1 have or
`orseen, it , has been a source of 'sorrow
and Tegret to me to.seelhe wanton des
truction.of a great deal of our valuable
timber : if,wo,con ti nue,4;mr—present
wholesale on.ale of destruction, timber will
in a few years be as seareb'in Canada as
in fhe - iiiiidle - tif nit Illinois prairie, and
we have no substitute to use for fuel dui.-
• - ing our long winters On mentioni ng•the
subject to others who, in most other eases,
are careful and enlightened men, their
answer has in general been, "I have plen•
ty to last, me while I live." Others have
answered, " - Theril is more timber in the
'country than we will ever use,;" shuttilig
their eyes, rth it were, to the filet that their
own homesteads and Their immediale
vi
cinity has - been settled inside of perhap
twenty years; and the timber is already
so scarce that they will perhaps have e-'
notigh to last out their lives, leaving bare
fields . and no timber, for either fuel or
_.fencing purposes, for their prosperity.
As we are all possessed of one hundred
acre lots here, 1 have often viewed with.
regret the quantity oftiniberiand which
each •man iii his jtdgenient has left; for
the future; some leaving ten, and some
fifteen acres,—which would not be so bad,
but, not having used forethought during
.4the time ;they were • clearing the rest of
their laud, they find when they have done
clearing,
that what is left is of little 61. ,
. ne, all the best of, it having been culled
out. ' • -
Considering that my. neighbors' plans,
or rather no plans, were erroneous; when
coMmenced clearing, I set aparttiventy
acres for woodland on one corner of my
lot. I Mould lteep my woodland in as
square a form as possible, as: the storm:
have less'efrect in overturning the large:
and-more valuable trees when in a com
pact form, than when it is stretched our
in a long, narrow strip. I consider twen
ty acres. of woodland sufficient on , a our
hundred acre farm, if managed in a jpdic
ousmanner. My plan would be, to tnakt,
use of all the fallen timber. Gist, then tin
dead and unsightly, and lastly the • over
grown trees. The benefit of-this plan
would be, the rendering of the woodland
more open and roomy; thus .alloWing
greater chance of growth to the your_
and thrifty trees.. if a nnich, less gnantitY
-than twenty acres is retained out of tin
original forest, the wind *ill have such
force upon it as to overthrow the most
valuable of the timber. I have remarked
in all small lots, after the larger timber.
has been either blown down or otherwise
- removed, a very inferior.growth of young
timber, it being.always stunted Illfd bushy.
These difficulties, I believe will be over
come by keeping a twenty acre lot, and
by judicious thinning of the timber, as
recommended above. It will beautify
and Ornament the place, and be of lastiM::

White Specks in Butter
IN reading the November number or
the . Farmer, I see , in your request fur
essays, oqe vfltich will find a response
from the ladies ? , „namely: ",What is . the
cause of, and best,,t:emedy Tor, white specks
in butter?" In answer, I will give my
opinion, from an experience for many
years in butter-making. • I have found
whenever a current of air has come di- -
reetly upon the - milk, that the cream would
become hardened in small specks on the
surface, which the process of churning
would - not break, and they would become r
incorporated in the butter. In windy I
weather,. these particles are the must
quickly formed. • _
111 y remedy for this defect, is not to al
low a draught of air direct upon the milk
nor to allow the milk to stand so long
that the action of , the atinasphera will
harden the cream ; but teat - in - I it as soon
as sour, and if possible, before the milk
• thickens. A tablespoonful of salt is thrown
into a jar, -which is kept in a cool place
—into which the cream is put, and brisk
ly stirred, whenever cream is put in, with
a stick kept in the jar for that use, till
sufficient is accumulated for churning.
The' cream is put into the churn, after it
has been well soaked in warm or cold wa
ter, an the weather admits; adding to tho
cream a quart or two of new or sweet
milk, which,, in cold weather, is heated
sufficiently to' warm the cream.. This ob
viates the necessity of standing the churn
in a warm corner until the cream is at a
'proper temperature for churning, and the
addition of the milk thins the cream; so
that When the butter forms it will be per
fectly clear. Sometimes, when 'the hut
termilk begins to separate, water is thrown
in, a little at a time, but never 'when suf
ficient sweet milk hen been. added before
churning.' The churning is.always done
in a short time. Butter that is put down
for market, should have as little water
used about it as possible.
When I ohserve these 'rules I always
have solid,' golden colored initter; free,
from white, speek, which, when*Perly
packed, with all, the' buttermilk worked'
out, Will keep sWeet as..long as you may
desire, and'he fttfk the-dantiest palate.,
Or'hood for hersesariety is 'an es
sential. Oats nre not the , only food °that
will fit; a herskforlaboron the road. Roots
are oreentithes much superior. Of these'
carrota are the best, and keep the horse ,
steek_and- in good Ifealt h. , Heavy hems
while fed on'eut corn•stalks, together writ'
a little corn and cob meal,- will not ajlow
any syt . aptins of disease. • „

The consumption of llosietter's Stomach Bit

Elderly persons rutty use the Bitters daily ns
