States, it is hot . subject - to those drawbacks which attend the pro ductions of Gooseberries, Currants and _similar small fruits of exotic origin.:f tThe peeuliar habit and character of the plant, however, renders it loss easily turned to profitable account as a common garden or' • lartn product As formerly known,•-the Cranberry, of which there were two spe cies common in our low swampy grounds or sphagnum swamps, was collected and • sold as an incidental product of unculti irated .astricts.• Eventually cultivation • was brought to bear on its 'peculiar char acteristics until yielding to artificial cul ture, it was produced on dry and more elevated grounds, and finally became special crop propagated and transplanted as we transplant Strawberries, or other • strmll fruits. With the supply, the de mand increased;' and in the New ,England states it has now become a valuable crop, wh It treated wit and attention . The wild Cran •‘ of two species: • The common (Oxycoens palustris) . for ,- .moriy.Vaccinutm is lbund in New . New York and northward, in sphagnum swamps, and the large fruited'(o itiacro• carpo) less common and superior as a fruit. Cultivators claim to havcat least increased the size of the fruit and growth of the plant; The name, BELL CRANBER4Y, is ap- plied to a reputed variety, which succeeds . on upland or dry. soils also called the Up land Cranberry.. . The LOWLAND,.or.GIiEnrcr, is the var iety most etiltiVated, and hundredsof bar rels tire annually sent to Neir.York mar ket, where. they commend, six to twelve dollars per barrel... , The product of an acre varies wally. With extra culture...it may reach three hundred bushels.. - cultivation. The most suitable soil for the. Cranberry,-is a sandy loam witli'a fair proportion of.decayed vegetable mat tea. For the lowland .varieties, swamps ritolaimed by the levelling - of the surface and removal of water, which can be readi= ly done by. ditCh draining and the expo. sure of the soil to the action of the at mosphere, supplying sand where deficient iu quantity; is the most obvious course. Owing to the fine fibrous nature of the roots, it is important that there should be sufficient sand to render the soil close in its texture yet not of a tenacious . char -actor. The weight of the sand Itas this effect: Planting. The plants which tire ob tained from cuttings furnished with roots are sot out iri shallow drills or ruts,- eigh teen or twenty inches apart; the plants about six inches spirt in the drill. Suffi cient soil must be drawn to the plants to bind them. The plants should,,to be suc cessful, be so sprtiad as to cover the sur face. To secure this result in favorable soil will require three.er font' seasons. t d Gathering the Crop. Thiri is done by mean's of a rake with wire teeth through which the branches of the plants pass, pulling off the fruit. And hero is pi-Ohs bly the most 'objectionable part of the routine. The rake must injure the plants considelably; but hand picking would not prove profitable. It is estimated that one man can gather about thirty bushels per day with this rake. , There has been mach attention recent ly gilien'to the propagation of Cranberry plants for• sale to planters. They 'cost a bout five dollars per thousand put up in . a safe manner for transportation. • •••.• Planting may be done either in fall.or • spring. In some localities, full would prove the most suitable; and in otheis. spring. This will mainly depend on the nature of the soil and climate, the,,.state - of the land to be planted, and the facili ..ties.for:procuring the plants.-- - We - should prefer spring in this part of the country as plants could be.—radily obtained here in April, and the soilprepared. In more northern latitudes, the early appearance of frost would interfere with the prepa tion of soil, and planting early in spring; so that fall would, under such circum stances, prOve the most suitable season. , The success of a Cranberry plantation, like any other fruit culture, will depend on the skill and care devoted to it. The difficulty of keeping the culture tree from weeds will prove one of the most foriuida ble'drawbacks. The crop,-when it cov ers the ground, will not admitNf the or dinary method of destroying &wee grass es (nut grass) so . eonitnonlyllfound in such soils. Should any of our correspondents desire to add any bitits on the cultivation of the Cranberry, we shalt please to give them publicity. Specimens were brought to our office raised by William Bates, Cape May County, New* Jersey, which measured, three and ,ono quarter inches in oircuufference The Farmer and Gard ner, TO 4 HAVE 'HENS LAY IN WINTER.- ` 1 1'1:1 be sure of a good supply of eggs in Vilinter l raise some chickens as early in the spring as possible. The prOPrletors and manufacturers of lIOS TETTJ 1t CIiLI4ISIIATIiD STOMACH BlT 'nuts can ixpeal with perfect confidence to physicians and eitizens . generally of the United States, because the article has attained n repu tation heretofore unknown. A few facts upon • this point will speak more powerfully than VOW 111C8 of bare assertion or blazoning puffery. The consumption of Ilustettces Stomach Bit ters for the last year amounted to over a half, million bottles & and from its mnnifegt steady increase in times past, it is evident that during the couling,l year the consumption will reach near and million bottles. This immense amount could never have been, sold but for the rare Medicinal properties milshred in the prepara ' tion, and the sanction of the most prominent physicians in those sections of the country where the article is best known, who not only : kecommend the Bitters tollieir patients, bu t are ready nt all times to give testimonials to its efficacy in all cases of stomachic derangements and the diseases resulting therelromL — ___ A „, • This is not a temporary popularity, obtalffetl! by extraordinary efforts in the way of trust peting the qualities of tho.Bittera, but a solid • estimation of an invaluable mcdioine, which is , 'destined to be as enduring as time itself. : HoStelter's Stomach Bitters have proved •••• Godsend to regions where fever and ague • and various. other bilious complaints have counted their victims by hundreds. To bo able to state confidently that the "Bitters" area certain cure for the Dyspepsia and like. - diseases, is to the proprietors a source of . tie- • alloyed pleasure. It removes all morbid matter • front the stomach; purifies the blood, and imparts renewed vitality to the nervous system, giving it that tone .and energy indispensable for the restoration of health. It operates upon . the stomachs liver, and other digestive organs, ' mildly but powerfully, and soon restores them to a condition essential to the healthy discharge functlOns of nature. ", Elderly persons may use the Bitters daily as per directions on tho.bottle,.and they will. flail . in it a stimulant peculiarly adapted Co comfort declining years, as it is pleasant.to the, palate, invigorating to the' bowels; excellent as a tonic, and rejuvenating generally. We have the evi dence of thousands of aged men and icemen who have experienced the benefit of using this preparation while 'suffering from stomach de rangements and general debility; acting under the advice of physicians, they have abandoned all deleterious drugs , and fairly tested the merits of this: - A few words to the gentler sex,: There are certain periods when their, cares are so harassing that many of them sink under the trial. The relation of mother and child is so absorbingly tender, that the. mother, especially if she bo young,ls apt to forget her own health—in her extreme anxiety for her infant: - Should the perioffof maternity_ arrive during the summer season, the wear of bodyand mind is generally aggravated. Here, then, is a necessity for a stimulant to recupe rate the energies of the system, and enable the :mother to bear up under her exhausting trials and responsibilities. Nursing mothers' gene rally prefer the Bitters to all other irivigara tors that receive the endorsement of physi cians, because it is agreeable to the taste as well as certain to give a permanent increase . of bodily strength. All those' persons,•to whom we have parties= rally referred ' ,bove, to wit: sufferers from fever and ague, caused by malaria, diarrhoea, dysentery, indigestion, loss , of appetite, and ail diseases or derangements of. the stomach., superannuated invalids, persons of sedentary occupation; and nursing motherd, will consult their own physical welfare by giving to Hos totter'd Celebrated Stomach Bitters a trial. CAUTION.—We caution the public against using any of the many imitations or counter feits, but' ask for ROBTETTEWE CELEBRATED STOMACH BITTElls; and see that each bottle has the words ! i ,1: 1 r..T.
