section repealed the 47th section of the Act of
16th April, 1850, known as the General Bank
ing Law, which required the Banks Dist and

ri'ad in place a bill relative to Brokers. Mr.
Thompson, ono to abolish the office of Sealer
of Weights and Meapurce in Montgomery '
county. On motion of Mr. Handal]. his bill
to establish a general system of Banking, was
made the special order for Monday next, and
every day thereafter, until disposed of. A bill
was unanimously passed. abolishing the Board
Guardians of the Poor and board of Health
of Philadelphia, and vesting the appointments'
of these officers in the Supreme Court. Ad
journed.
In the House, Mr. Wilcox, from the minori
ty of the Committee on the subjectof the pal

the cages of the animals at Can Andiurgh's
Menagerie, in Walnut street, and having open ;

patted him on the back, to which the Lion

DESTRUCTION OF THE WILLIAM : AND MAPS
COLLEGE.—TiIIs ancient, seat of learning at
Williamsburg, Virginia, .was destroyed by fire
on lho Bth instant. It was foundCd in 1698,
in the reign of William and Mary, who en
dowed it.with 20,000 acres of land, tinda do
nation in money. The btiildfngs were of brick
and capable of accommodating 100 students,
Its charter was dated on the Bth of Februa
ry, 1692, so that it was burnt on the anniver
sary of, its charter, one hundred and sixty
seven years from the date of its establishment.
Among the graduates of this college, were
Jefferson, Patrick Henry, and Winfield Scott.
