The case of this celebrated slave vessel,
wide!' is again prominently before the public,
appears to be so little understood by people
generally, that we.give thefollou'ing Ibets'in
relation to it from the Iloston illas:
Some twenty yeart:, ago, a slave ship landed
a cargomf African nvgroes on the Island of
Cuba. They were sold in lots "Id snit parch.
;fliers." A lot was bought by two SpuftiarOs'
named Ituix and Mendez, who subsequently
chartered a small vessel to take them to
another part of the Island. When out• ui
sight or land, the slaves rose and took'posses•
skin of the vessel, and demanded to be tOkett
back to their native home in Africa. They
committed no assault upon their purchasers.
further than to demand of theta their release
front bondage and theirvestoration to home.
kinked and liberty. 'Phew knew nothit ' or of
navigation, and the vessel finally found its
way into . Long Island Sound, and was for
malty taken possession of by the' Ilevenue
Cutter, and brought into,New Haven, where
the iases were tried, and the Court decided
that they were entitled to their freedom, and
they were subsequently set at liberty, and the
two' Spaniards lost their "property: , ' If
mistake IRA, the late John Quincy Afiains
volunteered to be the counsel for'the nygroes,
and went to New Haven and argued their
case. They were declared free by the I'is
triet Court of the. United States, from which
an appeal was takes to.the full Bench of the
Supreme Court, whe'r'e thiie decision tens of
