That portion of

• relative to Cuba, has created considerable ex
citement at Havana. The authorities of that
city havit addressed a•• memorial to the Queen
of Spain, in \villa they denounce the idea of
the purChase of Cuba by the United States, in
the following litnguage:
t•The shame of being sold cannot besupported
by,those who• always appreciate their exit'-

ever been assimilated by habit, religion, and"
customs, and which transmitted to them the
beautiful language, of Cement CIL The doverp
ment of Spain has not heard, and doubtless
will not listen to, an ignominous pretension
which wounds its sense of decency; but; nev
erthele'ss, the tirst M u nicipality of-the Island
has believed it to be its duty to raise its voice
to yitur Majesty, on seeing written this insult
to humanity and the illustrated age in which
we live—an insult in which, with a cool con
tumely, and a total forgetfulness of Olathe ad
mitted and recognized principles of interne
. tional relations. the only desire is to satisfy,,
the speculative aspirations and the interested,
views of a country, by bringing to shame
punctilious Government and a people who see
in the color of their flag a long review of glo,
. ries, an eternal remembrance of greatness and
heroism.
The Memorial has been signed by a large
number of the residents of the - eity,i.nd is, no
doubt, the general and perhaps unanimous ex
pression of the feeling of the entire population
of the Island.
