these made, tried them in the city, and -

I took it down to my native place, Chris
tiana, about fifty miles, from Philadel
.phia,. and made a trial. The machinery
was new, the boxes got to cutting, the
• engines would not work the people
laughed at MC and any machine. But 1
did not get disheartened. The proud
• spirit of American energy was within me.
I knew I was right and bound to succeed

PICKLED TOMATOES. Take'
smooth tomatoes, not 'very ripe; scald
then until the skin, will slip off easily
and sprinkle salt over diem. After they
have stood twenty-four hours, drain off
the juice and pour on boiling hot, pickle,
composed of one pound of sugar to every
quart of vinegar, and two tea-spoonsful
each of cinnamon and cloves. Wain off
the liquid,. scald it.und pour it on tiled
again every two days for a week, and

bushel of tomatoes, scald them and press
them through a conimon sieve.
