larnitq r Vtitartrynt. Visit to a Missooi.Ftha We recently Visited the farm of Mr Richard Gentry, of Pettis eon fy, Missouri. .and; as we have frequently seen fiat erio mound of larg e farms in .otltt;r States, we have conclu ded to furnish a descrip tion. of this. farm to our readers, in Urdor to show that Missouri is uoi behind her sister States in large farina r g . cod* farin: ing. The farm of, Mr •Dentrycontaing - seven thousand acres of land; three,: thousand • five hulidreff acres of which • are under excellent fence, and in a high state or miltivathin. It is divided, "chiefly, into lots of forty acres—making over thirty -miles of fence on the 'farm. The @ice is mostly made of rails, with 'stakes and . • • riders, and kept . up in the best condition. There is, however, a mile and a quarter Of post and board fence on the faint, and some two miles of Osage - orange • hedge, which, however, has not been turned yet. Ther9re on the farm ,sixty:tive large of the befit construction, and, abour -- -- the- same number: of. `draw.hars,. . The ..Fates and bars are made iti a large car ' penrer shop, in rainy weatheri`when the hands can be employed at nothing else All Of-the-implements are put in: rquiirs, • at such times, and many of the simple!. ' ones - manufactured. About . two-thirds of the thrill 'consists of high,. rollinir prairie;W an exctillent-quality----of---soil,_ and the other, third is in timber, • diately adjoining the pOrie. - - Thereare about-fourteen hundred acres . of the farm set in bine grass, seven bun dred and fifty acres in clover - and timothy meadow, three hundred and • sixty acres in-corn, onchundred and siity- -in __oats,.. twenty acres in Jhuagatian millet,: and the balance of the farm under fence is in 'woods pasture.' There are on the thrni twenty-seven large. artificial ponds. many of them of much depth, affording stock an abund once of Water at all Seasons.of the ,year. 'During our visit, three stone-musons were employed in erecting large stone pillars in various parts of the farm, at the otit lets Of streams., in which large water-goes were to 6e tang, so that. incase of Tres lets ; which are common on.large prairies, the gates would open the action of the water, and close when the water ha& passed, and preverit the fenie from being Washed, and tile escape of stock from one - field to another. .One of thetnost striking features olf ; servab!e is, that on this immense farm not a single weed is lb 'be seen. Even . the fen - cc-corners, that common receptacle of all that is foul on mest - fmmisTure - tmi clean of weeds as any city lawn. What I do farmers who have only two or dared hundred acres under - cultivation say to-I '• this ? Here are upwards of thirty miles - of fence. without a weed ot briar surround . ing it,:while many f.trats, with only a utte o'r two of fence, raise.enough weeds to seed the ,ohole - neighborhood The whole - farai is a p ittern of neatness: The hands pass over every field as often, es-it is necessary, and pull.• every burr, brunt 7 and weed that dare show itself. This has been done, for many years, until the . weeds have been subdued. ' Dlr. Gentry has been a large sheep -grower Some fifteen years ago,.finding - I.ll6 — fffirrkerilull - for horses and mules, he concluded to try Cheep. He accordingly procured from Kentucky Futilc four bun. dree head of the best Saxon and Spanish merino ewes. cis the foundation for the ---future flocks .!These_te_raised_Mea nook ber of years, increasing the size of his flock until it ranged for many years front two thousand eight hundred to three thousand head. He went to great ex.. pense in procuring the best bucks, and, • :,by judicious management, obtained a very superior flock. For.the last four or ' years has bee'n crossing his flocks with the French merino, paying as high as 15150 per head.for the bucks. Ile has some imported bucks of this breed now on his farm. 14e thinks the French merino superior to the Saxony or Swinish. merino, as possessing more constitution, greater weight of carcass, much greater weight of wool, though not of as tine a quality, though sufficiently so to command us high a price in the market. He has had the very best success in raising sheep; his (looks have never been affected with diseases so prevalent in the East have been entirely unknown in his herd. Ile has recently, reduced the size of his flock. to-about one thousand head, for the pur pose of giving more attention to raising mules. He js already quite extensively engaged in this business, bat -intends to give it more 'prominence hereafter ' There are. kept. constantly employed on the farm twelve grown hands and six boys. Our readerS may wonder liteg so large n farm can be so welLmanaged by this small number'Uf hands. It was a wonder to us until we saw the perfect system -of Mr, : Gentry's, plans. .Everything moves like clook-work. There is a time for every - thing, and everything 'must be done in its time. There is no hurry or flurry— but every thing moves along evenly-and quietly. Each piece of work is itteoled - to till it is' - done. system is & rior - q16 7 only secret of success. All . of the best labor-saving implements and machines amused by him, 89 that With one man he is able ; in ninny kinds of work, to perform the labor of ten men., Ily this • means he is able to accomplish this vast •• amount of work.' Mr. Gentry has a number of buildings erect.al, in which lie carries on. for his own use s ,various operations not, ettionem among fariners.. For instance, there, is n large tuill , house; ivffere all the meal for the family and stock is ground, lind where various other mills and machines are us'etl• There is a large slaughter-IMuse,. wit h kettles set in arches, and an excellent apparatus for rendering tail lard Then _there is a tool-house. a carpenter shop, a arness- ease, a op for makingsliitiglß. &c. 'There is also an eXcellont pair of Fairbanles cattle.seules, whieli will woirli six tons at each operation, with all tl e appendages for weighing cattle 7 blieep sWirre, .
