I have tried for years in succession all
of the nostrums to prevent birds from
pulling; worms from eating,-and steops_ol.
• various kinds to stun late its growth, and
find that tarring the seeallialies it distaste
ful to birds ;* they will pull and eat but a
little; but as to worms eating it, they seem
to relish it, equally well. The steeps to
stimulate growth, rolling' in gypsum, &c.,
'amount to but little. You cannot make
; enough' adhere to the seed to make any
perceptible difference, and unless the soil
and season favon, the corn will not come
so well as if planted dry. For instance,
if you steep the seed, and after planting it
hi very' wet and cold, it will not grow as
well, or if it isrery dry, it will not come
as we!l : tarring it will retard ils germina
tion in . any case. For the last five years
I have planted the seed dry, recently hand
shelled from the cob.
For scarecrows, .tbe best I kriow of is a
few crows shot and hung up by the legs, or
bait and catchthem in steel traps. •In
my younger days, these scarecrows were
ample to keep off birds: Fvery 'Yankee

the crows' nests in your immediate neigh

young, and then is the time to shoot some
of the old ones. Fence secured sixteen in
_ two hours. Go over your cornfield daily,
. and if` he crows have drawn any, be
there the next morning by three o'clock
