MONARCH. OF THE ORCHARD.—The
Rending .Press save that the largest apple

is a protuberance or excrescence of bark,
of great thickbess, not included, however,

of apples was never less than sixty. bush

to be over•one hundred years old, and at-,

MANURE.—We have frequently caution
ed farmers not to bury their manure toe
deep in the soil, as the tendency of their
juices is downward—not upward. A
writer fin an exchange says " I have
found in alhexperiinents that the nearer
I kept the manure to the top of the
ground, the more I got from it. I spread
et the rate of thirty to forty loads of man',
ore to the novo on the field, (on the
grass :) then put) the plough in from
ten to twelve inches deep—lt was an
old-fashioned plough and turned it over
very flat and smou•.h.--The rest•-of.the
piece I ploughed about eight inches
deep. I,treated the piece all alike, fifer
that, until I laid it down: - I meant to
put it whore the ammonia would not es
cape. I watched the field for six or sev
en years, and I could
. not see any differ
cuee in the crops, where this extra man
ure was put, till I took, up the piece
•gain, and then I purposely put the plow
down so as to bring up my lost manure
to the light and heat, and it told the
story for the next seven years where it
was.
To KEEP RABBITS, FROM
Tams.—The Site is ipproaching• - ivhen
we must secure our young fruit trees
against the incursions of rabbits, or have
them llled, or very Much injured. I
will give you the simple plan that 1 and
some of my, neighbors have pursued with
complete success. • I tear up old news
papers in strip . fifteen or eighteen inches
long, • 10 .wrap [lron around the body of
the tree, eniumencing at the ground, and
■eouring it with common twine.. The pa
per will withstand all the rain that falls,
on it, and . .I. never knew a tree injured by
rabbits ,that was thutiprotected, Anoth
er advantage of the plan is that it can be
so quickly done'—one person can do up
• hundred • trees in two hours.—B.
