" You have lately proven that gypsum,
in its oiclinary condition of dry powder,
_will not combine with carbonate of lime
and sulphate of ammonia; I know it is
a practical fact,' from trial on a large
scale.. "I' also. thought it would in , some
cases expel ammonia, because it bad in
jured an. experimental plate of turnips by
mixing gypsum with guano.— IVith no
more chemistry than a gentlentan obtains
• at college and retains scantily amid the
varied - dutietfand - pursuits Of life; Lhave
a very high respect for the results that
induction, like yours, in the case above,
• will give us,' but no confidence, in the
dicta of men like Liebig, whose genius
(and I thiwk, he has a great deal of it,) is

Seawer, of St: Louis recommends the fol.:
lowint - Felly tried method of improving
potatoes, so, as to restore them to the.ori-'
gine' soundness, richness• and mealiness
_-orthis vitluable root,—The plan is this :
- - : 2 -Keep back some seed potatoeifoi sil
or seven weeksifter the i usual ' time of
planting, say to the last week of Juno or
the first week of July, 'land then plant
and cultivate them the same as stock po
tatoes. They will grow until the frost
withers the vines, .when they should . be
dug. As they have.not had time to nit
tare, they Will be quite small—not more
than an inch or an inch and half
through; but they shouldull be carefully
gathered aid" kept safe from frost through
the winter,•and planted , at the usual time
- ptplanting in the -spritig=one of the
- small potatoes being sufficient for seed in
each hill. The result will be large sized,'
mealy potaitoes,'as I have'proved by 'se
tual trial. I hope it will
