Does the Moon Affect Vegetation ?
Very many practical farmers will be
prompt to answer this query in the af
firmative. Pliny saYs that if we would
•ollect grain for the purpose of immedi
ate sale, we should do So at the full 'of
the moon.; because during the moons it -
crease the grain rugtnents remarkably
to magnitude : but if we would collect
the grain to preserve it, weshould chose
the new moon kr the decline of it.. This
maxim may find sonic feeble support in
the fact, that., as a general thin!r, mme
rain falls during the increase of the 111 0011
lian during its decrease, which accounts
:'or
to an , umentation of die grain in bu'd
size of the kernel ; but it assuredly re
quires a robtfia' faith to suppose that the
noon at the distance of 2.4 0,000 mil es f rom
he earth's surface, eanhave any apprecia
ble effect. upon 'he grain, eit her in injrcas
gor diminishing its bulk. Th e same
author also prescribes the period of tic
ill moon for sowing beans, and that of
the new 111(1(111 for sowing lentils.
There. is 8150 an approximation to Pomo
•lling like an established principle obser
vable in the practice of the Agrinomes of
.-..outh America in their treatment of tit,
two classes of plants distinguished by the .
production of fruit on the roots, or on
their branches, but we are unable to in
dicate anything of the kind in European
Aphorisms. 'Vet it is the, opinion or be
lief of all European gardners that if trees
or vegetables are expected to flourish
with vigor, and attain their highest de
gree of excellence, they must be planted,
crafted and pruned during the increase
of the - moon. But this opinion, like
most others relating to supposed lunar in
t-int-ice, is wholly fallacious. The nu
merous experiments recently instituted
for the purpose of demonstrating the,er
roneousness of this belief, have proved
roost irrefragablv that the increase or de
crease of this satellite has and necessarily
ran have, no appreciable effeet upon the
phenomena of vegetable life or develop
ment.—luny of the maxims relating to
supposed lunar influences, are substan
tiated by no sound arguments or physical
reasons: they exist in the form of siin
pie prejudi es, ~yet are acted upon by
those Who the with the same
anwaverin , faith and confidence in their
verity, as thouol they were susceptible
or the clearest ;11111 ta , st p,sit ive proof.—
'flier. , sAreelv a single detail enibniced .
in the wide routine of agricultural enter
prise and effort, into which this super
stitious presumption of lunar power does
not mere or less extensively intertwine
itself. In some respects it is perfectly
Lrmless; in others its effects aro more
momentous, and positively- detrimental to
the pecuniarry interests and well-being
of those by whom it is indulged.—Ger
